Nick Pope is England #1 20 years ago imo.

Shay was an elite shot stopper.  But he didn’t dominate his box in an era that was a key skill. And it felt like he rarely saved penalties.  He couldn’t kick much either iirc.

I saw an interview Shay did with Nick Pope - there’s no way Shay could command a box like Pope does. Pope towers over him.

I love Shay - I think he speaks with the most knowledge and heart from all ex Newcastle players on TV. But always thought he was over rated. Got knocked off #1 in his prime by Joe Hart.

He was past him prime when signing for Man City

I've said it before but Pope 22/23 was better than any similar period of time Given had at his best. Given edges shot stopping but the difference between a cross coming in and knowing it'll definitely be claimed vs definitely won't is huge imo. Given has longevity on his side overall though.

Pope underrated here I think. I’m happy with him and don’t think Trafford will be guaranteed a start. I don’t think it’s a mega priority position but they know best

According to sky Trafford is our highest priority signing this summer.

If GK is our highest priority, I’m signing out now.

Hmm. Maybe RW and CB are our priorities, but the player we really want the most out of all targets is Trafford?

Pope was a well better keeper than given mind. Given would pull out incredible saves at times but was never in control of his box.

Stick pope in the keegan team and we win the league with his sweeper keeping and ability to take pressure off our fragile defense I'm not sure given could do the same.

You just need to look at our league cup win he was immense at removing trouble from our box with taking of high balls and sweeping he was cool and composed.

Pope is massively underrated on this forum. Always has been. He's a great goalkeeper!

Like Pope. Hopefully you’re right but not sure it is so straightforward. Whilst this works for some teams there have been lots of instances where it hasn’t worked out so well. Always think the most important thing with a goalie is ……. Well how good he is at being a goalie (and obviously being good at poetry really helps too).

Assuming they mean in GK department, that Trafford is top of the priority list. Not that GK is the most important player for us to sign. Albeit that I do actually think it's incredibly important to get a new one in.

No-one’s saying it’s straightforward. He might not be up to Pope’s standard with all aspects of his game at first but you have to trust Howe to make the call that his ability to play will offset any deficiencies. The nightmare scenario is obviously Onana but I trust Howe and I don’t think it’s likely.

I really like Pope, but accept he's near broken and we can't be relying on him for a full season. All good being there 15 good games, but then if he's injured again which it'll be likely, it's Dubs.

We've had the best out of him, got 2 UCL seasons and a cup. Forever thankful, but it's time to move on whilst opportunity for long term GK and a position sorted for next 7 years.

A lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised when they see the difference a goal keeper playing out from the back makes to our team.

True but Dubravka isn't bad with his feet either, but as we've seen from his stints in the team, we need defenders who can cope with a press too. That is more urgent than a keeper IMO.
