Of course, I meant that those statistics often serve as a general idea but they shouldn't be taken as absolute truths.

Maldini once made a beautiful tackle on Ronaldo (the Brazilian) and at the end of the match the journalists complimented him on that tackle.... he replied that if you have to tackle it means you've done something wrong before. Class.

True - though that’s probably easier to say when you’re possibly the best defender in football history!

I can still remember Woodgate’s debut at home to Chelsea at SJP (admittedly not in Maldini’s class, but possibly the best defender I’ve ever seen in B&W).  Hasselbaink was put through, but Woodgate intercepted him in a movement I’d describe as being like a crocodile intercepting prey, and unlike what ever other English defender I’ve ever seen would do (attempt a last-gasp tackle), he put his studs on the ball, rolled it away from Hasselbaink, and pinged a pass out of the defence to feet - and Hasselbaink was a pretty handy CF.  It is still the only time I can remember a collective gasp at SJP for defensive play - the feeling of ‘fuck me, that’s what a defender looks like’ suddenly dawning on 50,000 people.  I’ll never forget it.

So is this kid any good then or what?

Milan fans seem happy for him to go. I think we have to hope that Eddie can work his magic on him, because from the clips I’ve seen from him, he at the very least has some good attributes.

I'm seeing 4 goals and 9 assists in 3 PL seasons? Only played for half the season in 23/24, as I think he was injured for a long time. I don't think the offensive stats are that bad. I actually thought his weakness was defensively, but maybe I'm wrong. If I remember correctly he has played as a wingback for Brighton in his first season where he got 5 assists under De Zerbi.

I don’t know mate I just did a quick Google and transfermarkt search

Eddie turns players with good attributes into good footballers.

I don’t think he’ll be a guaranteed first choice starter this year but give it a couple of years and he’ll be an excellent centre back.

I had a similar reaction in Trippier’s first game. Thought he was a cut above anyone I had seen in black and white for a long time.

I know people say about us just raising the floor this window, but I actually think we are also inadvertently raising the ceiling too (or at least seeing the ceiling more consistently). The guys coming in are now providing genuine competition to the 'regular' first teamers, meaning they will have to step up their game to be at their best at all times, or they can now be realistically dropped for a good replacement.

Wasn't his first game against Cambridge in the FA Cup when we lost?
