One thing missing from the "we were poor on defense not offense" narrative is that we had trouble scoring against the top of the table. Take away the two blow out wins vs. Chelsea and Spurs and it looks even worse.

Did we?

2 v Man City

2 v Arsenal

3 v Liverpool

8 v Villa

That’s probably better than the majority of the league.

Don’t recall our defence being shocking. Do you not think the drop was us A losing Pope and B the reduction in our pressing game from our forwards and midfielders due to our injury situation and limited options to rotate?

A - yes, b - no, teams are gonna attack you at some point during a game no master how well or how good you press.  Tripps was awful last part of the season as was burn whenever he played left back, shocking is a strong word to be fair though.

Looking back at results, excepting Man City away scored against the top 5 in all the PL games, which is incredible really

The issue was conceding so easily.

As the special one once said, to win stuff you have to defend.

His aerial stats are very similar to Schar. Him and Botman should compliment each other well.

Him and Schar should in fairness, he’s playing with a Schar clone in Andersen week in, week out.

Why did no one on the forum mention that he was weak in the air before now? Would have saved a lot of excitement

It wouldn’t matter - people on here don’t zoom in on negatives 😉

FBref isn't the be all and end all of stats by any means but it gives a good overview of a player's strengths and weaknesses. Botman and Kelly are a little less meaningful because of the fact they've played alot less minutes than the others, so they aren't that accurate particularly.

What this does show is that actually Dan Burn would be the best partner for Guehi at this moment in time until Botman is fit. Guehi and Schar would be somewhat lacking in alot of areas defensively, although immense at ball progression and retention.

Such a repeated exaggeration. Trippier had a couple of bad moments as did Burn during games.

Watching Palace defend that corner is quite bizarre, do they usually zonal mark at dead balls? As it looked like they didn’t know what they were doing and were new to defending like that.

Guehi is the only one who has no momentum going in to his jump, so gets sandwiched between Richards and the Nantes goalscorer.

I know friendly games are a chance to practice these things in a real game but that is an attacking teams dream.

Zonal marking is one of those tacticians dreams that never ever works in practise (sorry Rafa)
