Newcastle United 1-4 Bournemouth (18/01/25)

They were miles off it from the first minute for whatever reason. They’ve been on a great run and it was going to happen eventually. But how the three subs came on and managed to be even worse was incredible.

Really important to look at yesterday's result in context. I'd be fine to sit through that every tenth game if we were as strong, consistent and powerful in the nine that preceded it. Other than Tonali they all seemed a bit off it, so hopefully just a blip and we have a great chance to get back on track at Southampton.

We were absolutely ran over by a very good team. Someone else said it further up the thread but on paper "Bournemouth (H)" is viewed as a gimme, when they're now an almost nailed on top 10 team with their squad and manager.

This isn't too often a problem thanks to how well we take the initiative and score first, but I absolutely hate watching us at home when we're chasing a deficit. West Ham and yesterday in particular, we were an absolute dream to play against in the second half. Fair bit of possession, absolutely no cut and thrust or creativity, slack final passes, gaps left all over the pitch and frittering away our own time. I don't pin that on Eddie entirely as I don't think we have the squad options for it, but he could really do with a drastically different "Plan B" option for those kind of scenarios.

Think I recall Eddie saying it a while ago but adding to the squad is an important exercise just due to keeping the group fresh and removing a stale feeling, before you consider what they can actually add from a footballing perspective. I think that even one new face could really help us in that regard for the second half of the season. Hopefully Mitchell and co can figure us something out.

I don't think enough was made of this mistake by Howe.

Against a strong pressing team, there was no need to force Botman into a bad spot.

The other piece I noticed was that Bruno was coming deeper again to get the ball. It's almost like he was playing a 6 again. Not sure why, if it was tactical instruction or Bruno was off. I think their midfield man marking forced Bruno to do that and it caused us issues. Yes the referee also helped them by allowing them to get after Bruno.

Schar came on and didn't do any better.  Think we'd have got beaten no matter if Schar started or not.

Bruno came deep because we couldn't bypass their press at all

Think you just give have to give credit to Bournemouth for a lot of our problems on Saturday

I think it was definitely noticeable that Bruno was playing more centrally than he has been and Tonali spent more time drifting wide. Whether it was instructional I'm not so sure, but it definitely didn't help as Bruno holds on to the ball too long and invites pressure. It left us looking disjointed like earlier in the season and isolated Isak.

Bournemouth press the 6 aggressively. Either tactical or players deciding themselves, Bruno came deep to start play. People can say Bruno holds the ball for too long but he's better under pressure than Tonali. If Bruno can evade a press we immediately have a numerical advantage,
