Ranking our Squad - 7 Joelinton

E is probably right, given his injury this past year, and his age, but it feels proper shit given it was only last season that he pocketed both Mbappe and Dembele.

Jamaal Lascelles ends up with an E+ which is probably about right but feels a bit harsh to me but that's what doing your ACL at his age does I suppose. 

 

We get a break from defenders now for a bit and move onto Joelinton.

 

I was torn between B and C here, and I think not long ago would have given him a C but I think this season and last has shown how much of an engine he gives us in midfield. Would he be what every team needs? No. And perhaps he suits certain games more than others for us. But when he's needed and on his game he's very very good.

C although it could be argued he's a B for our team/system with the way he covers the left side and allows room for Gordon (or previously Willock) to stretch teams with his defensive capabilities/covering. Difficult to replace his contribution, a unique player.

I think Joelinton is overall a B. I think for us he’s probably more often a C nowadays because of our shift to being less “intensity is our identity”. I think for a lot of clubs he’d be a B if they found the right way to use him

Agree with the last three posters. 
 

I’d say a B. As he plays a role in our team that covers 3 positions at once. He’s very unique with his skillset and is a monster in probably at least 4-5 games a season for us. 
 

If he is just being graded as a wide player or a CM in general. Then he’d be a C.

Joelinton's the first of the very clearly B-/C+ category that a lot of players will fill.

I missed Lascelles, who is an E.

 

Joelinton is a solid C for me.  No chance he’s one of the best in either the LW or CM positions in the league.  He isn’t our best LW, and isn’t one of our best midfielders, for starters.  Still love the lad and he is an asset.

Question - I thought the idea was to rank the players generally in a wider context, not on their ranking within the squad?  It does look like folks are ranking Joelinton based on his worth to us, not on who he is generally

If your good your good but for Joelinton specifically you have to bump him up for his versatility which is an asset for us which may not be as needed in the context of league. Doing a job falling into the back line, middle, left and right boosts him "on his day" to a easy B.  If I only thought him in the middle of a 3 and only that it might be a C+ instead.

Depends on what kind of side you have. 

 

If you play highly technical football with a traditional defensive mid he's probably a C. Stick him I'm a side that thrives on transitions and physicality and he's a B.

He's not world class but I think he's definitely better than a C. Players like Willock and Barnes are a C and Joelinton is a level above them .

The main takeaway from this thread is that if we look at each player as an individual then there are some pretty flawed players in the squad. Genuine quality is pretty thin on the ground as we can see from the (very honest) ratings we've given each player so far. Given how bereft the squad is of top quality it makes the job Howe has done even better. He's got this squad of C's and D's into CL contention, 2 Finals in 3 years and a good chance of another QF in the other cup. The collective is clearly far greater than the sum of it's parts and that's credit to Howe

A = world class, B = just below elite in terms of what the rankings mean.  Joelinton would be like a C+, Barnes a C and Willock a C- in PL terms.

We miss his tenacious attitude. Midfield has no bite without him and both Bruno and little Joe play better with him.

I think that's a good point added to the fact a sprinkling of B+/B players in a few areas drag up our D and C rated players as a collective. 

 

I find when you have arguments about which player would get into other squads and vice versa the element of how "these" players work well collectively can be missed. 

 

Makes the task over the next 2 or 3 years that much harder as we look to let players move on and integrate new with the same "this set of lads" type ethos.

The grading system guidelines were just to give a rough starting point. They're open to a certain amount of interpretation - everyone knows what A-E means. With enough votes it all comes out in the wash anyway. 

 

As for are we grading based on how a player fits in with us vs how they'd fit in elsewhere: there'll be an NUFC bias here of course as we'll primarily look to how they perform for us. The "any/most teams in the world" wasn't intended to be taken literally in that sense.

Joelinton is one of a kind in the PL. Fans of other clubs hate him as he's a big, physical beast. I do think all clubs could do with someone like him in the squad.
