Hoe strong are DR Congo relative to their Afcon group? Is it inconceivable that they get knocked out in the group stage? In which case Wissa would only be away for 10 days.

They’ll be second favourites after Senegal, so you’d think they’d qualify to the knockouts.

AFCON games are often really tight though, 0-0 or 1-0 either way, so it can sometimes only take a bit of bad luck and you’re struggling.

Afcon group games are indeed a grind. Often scrappy low scoring matches which makes it such a hard watch.

Just checked the betting odds and DR Congo are 10th favourites to win at 50-1.

So you'd expect them to navigate the group stage but it is unlikely they'll go any further.

Indeed, but Nigeria and Cameroon are both significantly shorter and they’ve just knocked them out of WC qualifying, so I think it’s a very difficult tournament to predict once you hit the knockout rounds.

DR Congo will play either New Caledonia or Jamaica in a one-off game in Mexico to get to the World Cup.

Very decent chance for them to Qualify.

Isaac Hayden playing at the World Cup.

That's a sentence I never thought would be said. [emoji38]

I'm seeing posts on social media that he'll still be out for next 3 games.. Any truth in this?

Edit: it was Craig Hope

When will Yoane Wissa be fit?

It won’t be against Manchester City this weekend and, as I reported in our last Newcastle Confidential column, early December was my information. If so, that rules him out of at least the next three - City on Saturday, Marseille on Tuesday and Everton next weekend.

The latest I’m told is that he is ‘very close’ - but when that is on the back of an 11-week absence, such language is open to interpretation. The important thing for Wissa and Newcastle is that he is working towards a comeback and there have been no setbacks with regards his knee over the international break.

The club want him to be ready to make an impact when he does return, rather than be introduced for a few minutes here and there over a period of weeks and be susceptible to further injury. My feeling on this for a while now has been that Wissa will not be seen until December.

Fwiw I heard he'll be on the bench V Everton.

He’s going to have to really score some goals whenever he comes back, looking a waste of money currently.

Of course, but the same could easily have been said of Tonali and Hall for their first 12-18 months (whey, replace goals with performances).

*granted, at his age we can’t really be waiting 12-18 months, but the principle is the same.

Starting to feel more and more like we’re managing his return with a view to him not going to the AFCON.

Which is dumb because there’s many games to go that will define our season. If we’re still heavily managing him up to mid December then it’s because we have strong fears about his knee and it needing surgery potentially.

Take our injuries with a massive pinch of salt after Botman and Hall injury not being serious.
