Luke Edwards level of coverage there :)

Unlike Edwards, I wasn’t claiming something different :)

edit: I was responding to comments about the club stopping the player being called up.  I said that they couldn’t do anything about that - and they can’t.  The player has a made a decision not to go - that was always available to him.

Having a completely different style of striker to what we have had in a while is going to be great too. Yes, he makes runs past the last defender but he's also one of those throwback strikers who has really great box instincts and will attack loose balls in the box. Love that about him.

I know many have watched compilations or his footie over the last several years but a good little read: https://breakingthelines.com/player-analysis/yoane-wissa-atypical-uncoventional-and-resilient/

Apparently the good doctor could still have called him up and prevented him from playing for Newcastle regardless of his showing up but they decided not to be a dick and respect the players wishes it sounds like.

Congo was always my favourite Dr.

They didn’t - the player did.  The club can’t stop the player playing for their country.  This is Wissa’s call, not NUFC’s.

The country can stop the player playing for his country by not picking him to play for his country

Which they did

As mentioned, I think DR Congo will want him fit and ready for the WC qualifiers, and Wissa will be desperate to get started in a black and white shirt, as well as to be up and running for the final UCL games/qualifiers/next round as he said playing in the UCL was a dream of his. There's no guarantee we'll be there next season.

Probably a sensible decision all round.

Ah good point.

Doom mongers for thinking a player would go and play at a major international tournament

For thinking the worst. He’d have no say, we’d have no say, they’ll call him

up with one leg etc etc etc.

Despite two of our main reporters stating otherwise for weeks.

He’s also clearly had a say in this, as he was always going to. As I said, it isn’t national service , man.

So, aye. Doom mongers. 😂

No idea if you were one of them or not, btw, but I’m guessing the fact you’ve responded  means you were 😀

but who cares? He isn’t going. Happy days.

Yes, they could have.  Which still means that the club couldn’t have done anything about it if they did - so, again, it’s not up to NUFC.

Aye. Who cares, really?

The end result is positive for us. He’s not going, which is great news, hopefully we can now see him kick on in black and white.

Thank you common sense. Thanks to Wissa for doing this.

Feels like this alleviates a bit of the time he missing via injury now as we had all assumed (had the injury not happened) we would have lost him for AFCON and 7 games or so. Big win for us.

Personally, I'm not arsed on the reason. We now have our number 9 coming back for the rest of the season. Fantastic news!

No idea how Nick and him will play in the same team, though. But that's why I'm typing on a forum and not in the dugout  I'm sure some of you lot will have some good theories. Interested to hear some.

Eh? Surely we will be using him as a striker.

Does he have to play through the middle or can he replace one of our 'wingers' but play a bit closer to goal? Big Wolf has to start, he's so creative and would gift wrap many opportunities for Wissa whilst banging in some himself. We also need to get in another half decent striker (in the £20‐40 million bracket) ASAP to add competition for places and back up, because let's be honest, big Willy is not that player and needs to move on. Sorry Will.

As for the AFCON, it's basically the FA Trophy of international competitions.
