He's a handful but I'm not sure he's ever going to be a prolific goalscorer. But at least he does one job really well, and that's to hold the ball up. We've bought a striker who doesn't seem to be a striker, and another one who apparently has retired after getting his big move.

Obviously a player like Brobbey is Kryptonite to players who lack mobility, unfortunately we've got ourselves into a position whereby 3 of our centre halves can barely turn and the other has a mistake or two in him.

In a couple of seasons his book value will be down to around £12 million, and so anything over that will count as profit.

Oh yeah, not much doubt on that. He's a guy who is strong as an ox, holds the ball up well, and can get into the penalty area for the odd goal as well. 

 

For £22m that's damn good value.

Just a bully of a centre-forward. Would be great in a peak Wimbledon or Stoke side which is why he fits Sunderland like a glove.

It's not really about Brobey per se. It's about the profile of signing. If Brobbey offends you then you can look at Thiago before he joined Brentford or Strand Larsen before he goes to Wolves.

 

I'm sure they'd love to sign those two now and shell out over £50 million. When they were both moving for around £25 million and could be brought in initially as younger squad players to backup Isak, when Wilson was falling apart, what were we doing?

Let's see what Thiago is like past Brentford? I think their system is what makes them look better than sum of their parts (Wissa perfect example, Mbeumo looked better there than at Man Utd so far).

That's the problem they're always waiting ...

 

So the likes of Wilson, Trippier and Murphy stay around too long as important squad players when they really should have been gone sooner.

 

Waiting means paying double when it no longer makes sense. The squad/rotation players haven't been good enough for ages now because they don't want to go for players that can be had for cheaper from outside the league that fee wise makes more sense for a squad /rotation player due to the PSR constraints.

 

This overly cautious approach is holding the team back.

I do like Thiago, he’s very physical and aggressive, he looks plain demented at times. Obviously he would still be a very expensive risk though.

TBF I think it's important to note that if our signings had performed anywhere near the level they were expected to we would've been fine. They wouldn't have been bargains but they would've been good enough to help the team.

What if we'd got Wissa before Brentford? Would he have been the same player here? Or is Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton, Sunderland the level for this sort of player?

The point was that when we already had Isak, we should have been looking at a younger player that was over performing in another league, and showing a lot of promise, to bring in as his backup instead of relying on Wilson, who was already always getting injured.

 

Thiago fell into that category at Brugge as did Strand Larsen at Celta Vigo. They both cost around £25 million I believe. Instead they went to Brentford and Wolves respectively while we were fast asleep. 

 

These are the sorts we should have been targeting to improve squad depth and if they didn't work out they can be moved on fairly easily without much of a loss if any at all, and you go and look at other options again.

 

Up until now we still don't do this well at all, and are still using the likes of Trippier who will probably get a new contract. Same with Murphy still  being here.

And those played that you mention don't become the players they appear at your Brentfords by sitting on the benches of the bigger clubs so they?

 

They're just as likely to turn into your Vincent Janssens, Hojlunds, Batshuayis. All players who in their day match the sort you crave here now.

Well that's the thing, a manager should be getting the players who suit his system. So how did we manage to fuck things up so royally in the summer?
