It's really depressing. Criticism is fine; I disagree with it a lot of the time (or feel like it doesn't give due regard to context/mitigation), but criticism when we're in a bad run is understandable.

It's the language that gets used which is so fucking depressing, about these people who've delivered such incredible moments over the year few years. Feels so over the top and hateful a lot of the time, and kicks you when you're down. Awful.

Yeah sorry for not being overly optimistic when we didn't bring in anybody and are stuck with the defense we saw today playing twice a week the next two months.

If there is a time to not be a happyclapper, this ain't a bad one.

There is a real problem in our fanbase now of so called ‘ fans’ taking pleasure in their negativity coming true seeing that as a ‘win’

Saying they are not bothered about a Semi final, saying they wish the manager plays a second side when 2 goals down, criticising everything. Willing their negativity to come true so they are ‘right’

Now we are at another level can we not just ENJOY it

It’s honestly just draining

How's the view from the cuck chair?

But nah seriously, these last few years supporting the club have been the best I've ever had and for that I'll always be grateful, the fact that we're now competing for honours and fighting for Europe is a far cry from circling the toilet bowl under wretched skidmarks like Bruce.

My frustration and negativity comes from seeing us sliding backwards at an alarming rate because our squad management has been poor and we look devoid of ideas tactically. Everyone get their share of the blame for that from PIF and the board, to Eddie, the coaches and the medical staff and of course the players.

Just like YAR, I want us to be the best we can be and it doesn't make me a bad fan for acknowledging that we are not maximising our potential and showing concern about our trajectory

We don't have to be optimistic all the time but back your players through thick and thin. It's the club's job to get rid of anyone who isn't good enough., not the supporters to hound them out. Just my opinion.

Maybe this thread can be a little haven for the sane. Those who appreciate how shit it was and how less shit it is now. Those who back the players and mangers (most of the time) and try to have some perspective. You can’t always win but at least most of the time now I think we might.

Football should be an escape from the realities of life, not a drain on it. Look how soulless the City stadium was tonight, be happy you support a team that isn’t like that.

Champions league knockouts to come. Personally I can’t wait.

There is always a flip side, where those deemed “negative” actually just want the club and team to be as successful as it possibly can be and are airing their frustration at gaping holes.

Striving for improvement, growth and success is not negative.

That frustration can of course become emotive and some reactions or particular words may reflect that. Some said in the heat of the moment, others because that person might be having a generally shitty time or day outside of football.

None of that makes anyone less of a supporter than anyone else.

May as well get back into the “support the team, not the regime” bollocks of who is the best fan, those sat in the stands clapping the players off after a 5-0 defeat at home or those at home refusing to attend.

Why not just accept you have differences in opinions and keep the personal insults and dick measuring contests out of it?

that's sort of my point. It's actually more a mirror image of it under Eddie.

Expectations, arguably rightly, inevitably rise when quite a bit of coin gets spent after a period of success. And inadvertently so when the club are charging the prices they charge at SJP now for tickets.

see this is the type of post I appreciate. It's not over the top, throwing in words like 'dereliction of duty'. I'm frustrated as well, man. And for what I think is good reason. It's just the Nuremberg Trial garbage that really annoys me, and the context-free, ahistorical cycle every season.

I'm just enjoying the ride after the hopeless Ashley years. It's nice to be competitive and have a team and manager that I can be proud of. Honestly I'm more pissed off about our fans reactions to losses than the losses themselves right now.

Another aspect is more of a theory like, but with some people (not necessarily on here) I get the impression that they were better off and easier to satiate under Ashley because the stated ambition was met nigh on every season.

Doesn't almost everyone here want the club to be successful? Pointing out holes is different than Wissa is shit, Elanga is shit, Trippier is shit, Tonali is shit. Ramsdale is shit. Eddie is shit. Wilson is shit. PIF is shit.

How does that help get us to be more successful?

I think most of us are accepting different opinions. This misses the point. And one of the cliche fallbacks in arguments is "you know you are allowed a different opinion", and "loads piled on me when I said..." It's the self-martydom as much as the repeating doom cycle.

W17 D8 L13 this season. It's an imperfect season to say the least but we're still competitive. Not gonna try and gaslight anyone into thinking they're wrong for wanting more, but it's not like we're shit. We're just struggling a bit; a result of a summer where we hardly got any of the things we wanted, and a lot of the things we didn't - compounded by a miserable injury list and an awful schedule. I think the season was destined to be trouble as soon as Isak was left out of that Celtic friendly.

Have you got a poster to evidence who has made these comments without additional context, explanation, viewpoint or suggestion?

I’ve seen people say x player is no good, but in other threads making reasonable critiques or suggestions on alternatives.

Can’t say I’ve seen any poster just posting comments like that.

Are you serious? Just go to the Wissa thread right now.

Everyone wants the best for Newcastle man.

The problem comes when there's a lack of slack given to players and a manager who've delivered success and seemingly absolutely zero awareness of how other supposedly better alternatives have performed in the same circumstances.

Despite that there's still an insistence that these alternatives are better and that what we have isn't good enough.

Sorry, I know.

Was just trying to do a nice traitors reference and not turn our interaction into a negative event in the negative thread about negative fans.

Feel like maybe the negative fans thread as poisoned even our non negative interactions.

And isn't that kind of a snapshot of what the themes this thread deals with. Turning fans against each other and promoting more negativity.

In way this thread could be one most important ever created here.

Thank you

The die was more or less cast when Cherki scored in the first leg.

I’ve supported us through our three really successful periods now and this time is up there with my youthful joy of the Keegan years when I was only 11 when he came back as manager.  No matter what happens in the future in what looks like a key transitional period is ever going to take that away.

But that was pretty grim tonight, after 7 minutes Man City didn’t have to leave second gear and by 45 they were in 1st/neutral.

Just because I’ve had the euphoria of the cup win of last season doesn’t mean that we can’t be a little worried about how our form has plummeted this season and there being no signs of the course being righted.

We lost one of the best strikers in the world last season.  He had that X-factor and more importantly we played to his strengths to help him score as much as possible, with defenders being terrified of him. But the business in replacing him is a significant concern with neither striker looking effective in what is still the system we had set up for him.

That and the fractured performances of all but one of our wingers has blunted us massively.

I've always been quite negative in that I don't expect too much, but to be honest I think that's why I'm in the more positive side of the fan base at the minute because I see the fact that we were still in all competitions in February as decent.

I realise it could quickly go out the window in this run if games but I put that down to the restraining rules more than anything else.

If we hadn't played 347 games since December and were struggling in the league I'd be more inclined to whinge about management etc.

Still a bit deflated obviously.
