That was without a doubt the worst game of football I have ever been to, they were trash and as soon as we went 2-0 up we got super complacent (understandably) and started playing as badly as they were, cue 80 minutes of both teams repeatedly giving the ball to each other and us rolling it around at the back. All understandable but I'm very dissapointed to have spent £70 on that. Stadium was like a funeral home as well, I've never been able to hear the players clearly on the pitch before. I was middle of the East stand and had people around me talking about other games, how the seasons gone and how work was going and holidays and stuff. Definitely should have stayed home! Glad we're through but crikey that was a poor experience!

You must have missed the multiple 1-0 defeats at Wigan every Boxing Day.

It was fine where I was, some singing, some shouting and a general good time.

It wasn't the best technical game of football we've ever played, but going two goals up and then essentially just cantering into the last 16 of the champions league is class. What a great thing to experience.

Didn't care for the clapping of their first goal, or the ole's - what on earth are we doing man [emoji38]

Their fans were on top form so fair play to them, that was a long trek to support their team, especially in a game like this. One of their guys kept repeatedly whipping his top off, but ya kna, when in Rome I guess...

All in all, it's a Champions League win under the lights. If we can't enjoy that then what's the point.

I think some of it's where you sit in the stadium, I obviously picked poorly today and your point about the win being great and a fantastic thing to experience was why I was expecting a bit more from today both on the pitch and especially from the fans. These nights don't come around very often, it baffles me that people would go to them, not sing, talk about work and then leave 10 mins before the end.

That is baffling. Leaving early and not getting involved is an affont to the team.

Football365 continuing with their anti-Newcastle bias tonight - not only sticking the boot in again (when we've won 9-3 on agg), but also piling in on Woltemade.

Cunts!

It’s a weirdly aggressive tone they take to a complete non-event.  It’s not even that Stead doesn’t have a point in what he’s writing - but it’s coated in this oddly snarky tone.  F365 used to be an attempt to promote ‘proper’ football writing, but it’s now filled with sub-par fanzine pish doing clickbait articles.  The lad is probably being paid about £50 an article in fairness, in what must be a deeply unfulfilling way to earn a pittance.

The olés were shite. Hope their fans have a good trip. Bring on Barca.

Just seen someone compare it to Soccer Aid on Twitter. Applauded their goal, booed the penalty, ole’d them

Were the there tonight? The atmosphere was exactly like the Sela cup games I've been to the last couple of years but less kids. I've probably not been to as many games as some people, I didn't go much at all during the Ashley era and I was a student till 2004 so couldn't really afford it unless my dad took me when I was younger than that. I've probably been to maybe 40 total over the years? I've never seen an atmosphere like that outside of friendlies. Like I say, I understand why it was bad it but it wasn't fun to be at.

Yes I was there tonight. Ive missed under 20 home games in 45yrs and if that was the worst game you've ever been to you've been spoiled by the few youve been to.

Yeah I must have been really lucky, that's the worst atmosphere and some of the worst football I've seen outside of friendlies. To be fair I've seen significantly more wins than losses so maybe I have been lucky.

Just finished watching the game. Nice win at home, leading by so much on aggregate and with a weaker squad it seemed from the first leg I thought the lads did alright.

1) One of those Qarabag lads looked like he was a captain on a Soviet Foxtrot, the guy with the longer thin beard. I guess these are the things you notice when you lead by 5 to start the game.

2) Burn got rinsed on that goal and I assume even in the prem that was a handball on the second but I would happily concede otherwise to those more understanding of the laws.

3) Osula didn't do much.

4) I thought Wolte played ok, that through ball to Murphy was perfect.

5) Thought Ramsdale had a good game.

6) Tonali is a fucking bulldog.
7) Thought Barnes was pretty good throughout.

It was boring but I have been to far worse.

Worst I’ve ever been to is possibly Charlton in the rearranged snow game (0-0), Fulham just before Christmas (0-0) or Palace in the cup in Howe’s first full season. Don’t think anything happened in them games.

Like the Ashley/McKeag/Westwood years never existed.

Edit...and its probably about 35 games Ive missed. Don't want to come over all superfan but just given a perspective of years. This could end up as a thread...my worst game as a Newcastle fan was probably Barnsley away the season we nearly went down and KK came in as manager late on. 3-0 not a shot let alone a shot on target then Hudderafield fans on the train telling us its "easy to support a big team".

Strange night. Not many of our players covered themselves in glory but hard night to give a fuck with such a huge lead. Absolutely fair fucks to the Strawberry Corner standing bit as they were the only atmosphere in the ground.

Joelinton looked devastated to come off but he had played well. Nick was hopeless bar a great ball for Jacob Murphy, Alex Murphy was one of the better performers. The front line was very disjointed, Osula was found wanting really but nobody really shone at the top end of the pitch.

Let’s never speak of it again, onwards and upwards

Like I say I didn't go much during the Ashley era, I did to start with, but when it became clear he was just running the club to make personal profit I didn't want to invest in that so stopped going more or less all together so yeah, I wasn't in the ground for a lot of those. I still stand by it was a crap game even if theoretical worse games exist which I just haven't been to (which is probable given our varying sample sizes).

Jesus that brings back unpleasant memories. I'm from Huddersfield originally and for about 4 years in a row I couldn't believe my luck when the fixtures were announced and we had Wigan, Blackburn or Bolton away on Boxing Day. I would get to go to a game while visiting my family at Christmas! Then came the game. Usually a depressing shitfest 1 nil loss and a very hungover drive over the Pennines and the back of my Dad's too warm and stuffy car 🤢.

Don’t really want you to feel more cheated, mate, but the coverage on Prime was top class. Best pre match I had watched. Not just as it was actually about the game! Good interviews (Wor Fans, Hopkinson etc) good pundits and some interesting angles taken re where we are as a club, where we going, and what qualification means.

It's one of those games and results that looks so obvious/inevitable with hindsight. They were essentially given the weekend off by their league so they could give a better account of themselves and would have been hugely motivated to do well. Our lot were a mixture of tired, not wanting to get injured in essentially a foregone conclusion game and overly desperate to grab a Champions League goal or two (see Big Joe's reaction to getting substituted). The crowd was subdued but what do you expect in a game like this when there is so much football.  We won, we're through, no one was injured so a decent enough result.

Just to give some context on your experience.

There’s been many, many, many worse games than that. Count yourself very lucky if that’s the worst game you’ve ever attended.

The atmosphere you’ve described is the same for the vast majority of games these days. And funeral home is an apt description, the demographic of match goers is largely middle to old age people.

You also sat in a stand that’s notorious for being full of people who do exactly what you’ve described.

The lack of vocal support is endemic around most of the ground but the East Stand is known to be the worst spot for people who turn up season after season to chat to their pals or sit in silence because it means they get a couple of hours away from the wife. The football game being played on the pitch is inconsequential.

And you’re quite right that the ticket prices are ridiculous. It’s the reason why I wasn’t there last night.

How patronising was clapping their goal  I didn’t join in, felt it was shan on them

Qarabag coach Gurban Gurbanov was full of praise for the Newcastle United faithful last night. Despite the tie being over before a ball was kicked, the home crowd applauded the visitors' efforts on top of the home side:

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Newcastle fans. They applauded our good attacks and the goal we scored, and sometimes even cheered us on. They showed themselves in the best possible light"

Just a member of the Qarabag staff saying what a superb job our fans are doing.
