It does have its benefits for teams like us that have a much better chance of qualifying to the RO16.

Does anyone want 6 English teams in the last 16 though? I don't particularly consider that a positive for the format to be honest.

"In the first half, we played too directly in attack. We lost a lot of balls. They were very fast and very effective on the counter-attack. We talked about controlling the game in the second half and playing better in the low block." - Flick

Worth calling out that the opponent made some changes. As always, there are two sides involved.

Just feels very "Yay we made PAR."

The last one was so much more memorable imo and we came rock bottom of our group. It was agonising, on a knife edge the whole time and had that PSG night.

Don't get me wrong, I've looked forward to every game on the day, and winning games is always nice - of course it is. That Benfica game a thousand years ago was probably the stand-out of all the wins but they were a pretty shit team.

It's just had the vibe all along that it was going to be a trudge through ten medium-stakes games before we inevitably got dumped out at the first knockout stage. And that's exactly what happened.

I assume it'll have done good stuff for us financially but as a sporting memory it doesn't compare to all our previous goes.

Problem is the amount of games it takes to get there knackers us on all fronts.

I couldn't care less if it benefits us and teams like us really.

Really?

Like Yorkie just said, our last CL campaign was much more memorable, surely that's what we want from the CL?

Next season it'll be another shite competition with loads of English teams but the likes of Man Utd and Chelsea benefiting from it, you're really going to be happy about that?

I don't think anything about either of our two European adventures have a single thing to do with the format tbh.

I don't follow. Two European adventures? Which two?

I don't care  Worrying about other English teams would be performative on my part, I don't even think it's anything more than a phase even if i cared.

just spoken to my two lads who went to their first european away game without me.

they loved the build up and the first half.

they are gutted as expected. on the coaches back to the airport courtesy of wonkysheep.

before the game they were against us qualifying even for the europa league next season. "an ass tournament" the younger one called it.

after today they are desperate to qualify for any kind of european competition next season.

its not just about the results, european trips are great experiences no matter how weird and wonderful the clubs we play.

Last time in the CL and this season in the CL.

You don't think the format had any bearing on our respective experiences?

All I know is we got to the same point under Sir Bobby in 02/03 and to just myself personally 20years ago though it was, its more memorable than this seasons which ended 2hours ago.

Effectively three or four knockout games within the group context, six-eight games against contemporary giants and every one was competitve.

An extra 2 to 4 games isn't ideal but I think teams like us take that deal.

League phase is honking, dunno if it’s nostalgia from watching the group stage and the drama growing up, but agree with others on here.

Our last CL campaign felt better than this one, despite going out a couple rounds earlier.

The new format has killed the Europa league - the fact Spurs won it last season says it all.

For years people moaned about the clubs in 3rd dropping down into the Europa.

Only thing I don't like about the new format is how pre-determined the knockout stage is.

Honestly, I like this new format better if only because we get to play a wider variety of teams in the "group" stage instead of being stuck with whatever three we draw out of a hat.

Can't see any reason to do a deep dive and post-mortem into this tonight. We got spanked by a team far better than us who clearly pulled their socks up at HT and stepped it up to a level we're not capable of competing at. The second half got a bit out of hand but they're better than us and deservedly knocked us the fuck out of the CL.

We're still in one piece and have the league to compete for now. There needs to be a inner burning going on in the guts of each player now to put it right and it needs to start on Sunday. Take it all out on those cunts down the road, need to nail those arseholes to the fucking wall on Sunday afternoon. No excuses

Hopefully we have greater player depth to handle it next time. I'm with you, didn't hate the amount of games, quite enjoyed playing in Europe through to March, which we didn't get to do last time.

Almost none whatsoever no. There are so many other moving factors involved - eg the difference in opposition, how we're playing, who our players are, it not being the same novelty as the first one in 20 years - that all overwelm any perceived impact from a change in competition format.

Our target to get to 'get out of the group stage' or 'get to the next stage' are a distinction without a difference really.
