BBC and itv have missed a trick not having a 7/8am highlight show each morning. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting a spoiler free 30 min catch up on the overnight games

Fwiw you can watch 8~ highlights spoiler free on iPlayer, check out the NWOAT thread for links.

I do agree though, amazed they haven't done that.

Was happy with that result, we're missing some quality in Davies, but thought others stepped up and we were closer to winning than Bosnia. I think that's probably our best game in a WC I've seen. We were terrible in Qatar.

Main thing is Canada got better as the game went on, gives them good momentum for the next game. defensive shape was generally horrible.

Shape will get better with Davies on the pitch, but it’s always been ropey.

Honestly I said it at the last World Cup where Canada were decent in all 3 games, but lost them all. They suffer from the Nations League. They don’t get a chance to play against European opposition enough to be able to learn how to play cleverly, how to see out games etc.

They were the better team by far, but because they don’t play anyone but the USA, and a Mexico team that are nowhere near the level of it’s predecessors, they don’t get to play against the level of opposition they need too in order to improve.

I remember the Belgium game in particular. You were by far the best team, but Belgium had that experience in knowing that you would tire. They hit you on the counter towards the end of the first half, and as the game went on and you got tired they knew that your chance of getting back into it was disappearing.

It was honestly very similar to when Newcastle played Dortmund in the Champions League a couple of years ago. Dortmund had the experience of knowing that they can do a foul in the middle of the park to kill our attack and the referee won’t punish them as we hadn’t at that stage advanced to the dangerous area of the pitch, yet we were naive enough to just let Dortmund get further down the pitch in their attacks.

Dortmund were particularly the better side, they were just the most experienced in game management.

This chimes with what I've been saying about the benefits of expanding the World Cup. I actually don’t mind the expansion too much. You can rely on FIFA to fuck things up for cash, but in this case I think it might accidentally be a good thing.

There are people complaining about diluting the quality, but I’m not worried about that - it will rise to the top as the tournament progresses. Sure, there will be mismatches but there always have been - I’ll never forget Hungary-El Salvador, or Germany-Brazil. Rather than a team like Canada being a sacrificial lamb that has to mix its metaphors and go into its shell to try to survive, they are actually likely to get at least one game where they are up against somebody comparable and can play with a bit more freedom.

There have always been a ton of shitty games at the World Cup, forever. That’s never going to change. I just really like that more teams are going to get the chance to experience it, to pit themselves in a proper competition against countries with completely different styles and attitudes. The Canada game was a perfect example.

It’s sickening, like. We should have one just kicked off with another two in the chamber. Bed by 11, do it all again tomorrow, lovely stuff.

Would want to avoid buying David like the plague, looks ill suited to the PL and how we play.

Rinse and repeat our forum with someone suggesting we should sign him.

Embolo and Rodriguez despite always playing in major leagues feel like players you only ever see at international tournaments.
