I'm never going to agree that what's happening now is just a perfectly natural evolution of English football's journey since 1992 and of Newcastle United, and I don't agree with a fair bit of that in all honesty  but it's all good, we don't have to agree on what we think is important or what we think is worth risking the sacrifice of :)

100% mate - and believe me, I’m not happy about the journey of English football :)

Nah, really. I can't believe the outrage at the proposed super league breakaway has so quickly become just wanting desperately to be part of that same cartel that we all know is completely and utterly fucking the sport.

If people want to be part of that because it's the only way to compete then fair enough, like I say I'm not trying to speak for anyone else. I think it's a fucking shit state of affairs and have no interest in us being part of pulling the ladder up

The lack of a) punishment and b) traditional British media response of fucking off what was ruining the entire system we have all known is and will forever be an absolute stain…(until it probably happens).

Competing doesn’t mean joining them.

Football sold its soul decades ago - John Hall got ridiculously excited about joining the ‘Super League’ (as he used to sometimes call the PL) and couldn’t wait to fuck over the other (then) 70 clubs and keep most of the cash.  The ladder was pulled up in 1992, not 2022.  The European Super League was and is a catastrophically bad idea - but I fail to remember any whines or complaints from our support when Hall was also banging on about a European Super League in the ‘90s, with us as members.  The ‘Champions League’ was created to maximise money for the big boys and absolutely wrecked the balance of European football to the extent that no Eastern European side ever looks competitive in Europe.  The FA Cup has been torpedoed because the ‘rewards’ are not great enough; so top flight sides will play their stiffs and go out early to avoid the risk not finishing 15th again.  The sport has been fucked for decades now - clubs trying to duck out of cups early because of the ‘risks’ to PL status has been far, far more damaging than PSR / FFP.

The support has been exploited throughout all of this - English football went all seater then ramped up the prices contrary to the express advice of Lord Taylor (who stated that all seater grounds should not mean the support being exploited for cash); piss poor clobber for high prices (which our old owners had a good laugh about), obscene ticket and TV pricing, and for all the talk about SJP, I can remember the ‘bond scheme’ and the Platinum club’s introduction; all about getting the most money possible, basically SJP in the ‘90s is what Spurs have today, and I’m meant to get misty-eyed about it?

SJP in its current form isn’t some bastion of football stadium purity; it’s a chrysalis form of what other clubs are now building and we are at severe risk of being left well behind.  We’ve potentially got a chance with the current ownership to build a ground that would help us compete at the elite level, as well as bringing in a billion quid or more of investment (and jobs) into the poorest region in Britain - and folks are upset because the stadium footprint might be moved 100 metres up the road?

Excellent post, BB. I agree wholeheartedly with all you've written there.

It's deeply depressing that this is what football at a higher level has become, but it is what it is and Newcastle United must adapt to compete with the lionized 'elite'.

Has become? It was always like this just at a different level and we were never at the top table. Before Man C was Man U and before that was Liverpool.

I was meaning since the late '80s when 3 or 4 clubs assumed control over the governance of football in England. Of course the decade before that wasn't much fun either (with crumbling stadiums and rife hooliganism), but at least there was a far greater equilibrium.

I’d prefer current location, but with a bigger stadium that wasn’t lopsided

But can’t see it being possible given site restrictions and lack of short term ground share

Moving into Leazers Park area doesn’t really affect location, so I’d be very happy with that

Moving to Arena site (unlikely) is so close to current site that whilst it’s a new location I’d be happy

Out of town location (hopefully unlikely), I’d find that difficult to accept

And the current stadium was impressive 20+ years ago but now is very dated and tired

Even if the very least you want is to get through a turnstile quickly, have a piss & get a drink, these are all a pain in the arse currently

Plus the acoustics are shite, you can’t even see the whole ground from back and east corner of Gallowgate and we desperately need to move people to get like minded folk together and get more standing

I reckon if you call it 'Leazers' you shouldn't be allowed in the ground.

Wouldn't affect me. Have already got a lifetime stadium ban for sneaking into the family enclosure dressed like The Child Catcher out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

A few too many of the 5XXL lads for that to work.

They will all be moved to the newly expanded "Level 14" with stair only access.

Could we not just cut the current seats in half, allowing us to double the seat capacity.

Replace the seats with benches and so long as you don't have 52000 fat bastards the capacity will be 70k. Bingo! 😄
