The northern English cities just don't have meaningful green spaces in their urban centres in my experience. Leeds and Manchester in particular are God awful concrete jungles imo.

 

British cities in general I feel are terrible for green spaces in their cities compared to our European counterparts for example.

You can sit in the Gallowgate and be about 450m from Grey's Monument. It's about as city centre as it's possible to get tbh

 

It's why Newcastle (A) is many fans' favourite awayday on the calendar. Off the train/bus and bosh - city centre, great food, drinking options, no fucking about with taxis and getting about and it's also a fucking mint city to be in even on the worst of days

She's not doing it to protect Leazes Park though, the place is an actual dump now and is getting worse by the day. She also doesn't mention anything about rats running all over the park either. I love how in her Facebook post sharing the petition she says and insinuates that the FAB have a close relationship with Newcastle City Council. That ‘close relationship’ is limited to 1 FAB member who is a Newcastle City Council Councillor.

 

However she seems to neglect the fact that the very same FAB member is also the chairwoman of Friends of Leazes Park.

In her defence, pointing out the impact to wildlife is a good thing.  The challenges the world faces and the impact it has on the ecosystem is huge, despite this only being a small part of it, any change to such things effects everyone, and everyone should be more aware of such things.  Its equally fine for people to challenge these thoughts, when plans have not been announced.  If the club plan for the Leazes move and offset the impact by creating an equal or better greenspace, then the impact is lessened.  To pre-emptively challenge based on hearsay does no one any favours.  Its fine to raise awareness, but the usage of Saudi Super Stadium shows level of pettiness and damages the challenge overall.

She makes sure she doesn't mention the rats though, which will be having a very negative effect on the park and the wildlife. Obviously doesn't fit her narrative though.

Tbf Rats are still part of the ecosystem, and whether we like them or not, provide food to microorganisms, invertebrates, help with some elements of pest control despite being pests themselves, and other things such as pollination/seeding etc in the circle of the wider ecosystem. They do however need to be managed in terms of numbers.

Which they aren't being. I've got no sympathy with what she is crapping on about, all done before a plan has even been submitted. Leazes Park is neglected, overgrown, rats all over and no plans for any restoration. The new stadium will see an increased park size than currently and I'm 100% certain the club will ensure that the park is brought to a high standard and will have discussed all implications with wildlife and have plans in place for this also. Sorry to me it is an agenda with the help of the sad mackem cunts signing up. As I said fuck her, she's going to look a mug when the plans are announced

Our main City Centre Parks (some laid out in Victorian Style, some not) remain, as always, as Exhibition Park, Town Moor (including Castle Leazes Moor etc etc) and Leazes Park.

 

That is just how it is, we are very lucky to have all of these attached to our urban City Centre.

In those cases the parks are surrounded by the city, people live and work more around them. The park is more a part of everyday life. I guess also because most people don’t have a garden or any outside space at home.

Yes, I lived next door to Regents Park in London for a number of years, used to play football, cricket and tennis there regularly, so central London Parks are good, but very much so are central Newcastle Parks.

 

A much enhanced Leazes Park, after our 70.000 seater new stadium replaces our old St James' Park, will then then be even better, and certainly much better for the residents of Leazes Terrace.

FWIW I play tennis in Leazes Park and I still think it’s generally nice. At least at that end.

No I agree in the main - they are all north of the city centre and I've never really classed the Town Moor as a park and exhibition park was mullered for the central motorway and T Dan Smith's alleged corruption.

I will caveat that the city centre is tiny in comparison to most cities and public transport in Newcastle is awful. However if you consider St James' as in the city then Leazes Park definitely is as well but the club could be about to drastically change that - hopefully for the better as I am fully on board the new stadium train.

It would be great to see some sort of sports club open as part of the overall plan, with mixed courts for padel etc. Even throw a few clay courts in to make us fancy like the French and Spanish.
