Was going to say exactly the same thing. It's horrible

I want a REAL cathedral on the hill. Spires, steeple at the front, all made from stone and brick. Something  worship and look up to and wonder 'how glorious is that'

I want something totally new and unique, somehow get castle turrets running around the outside linked with blue steel arches to represent the Tyne bridge with giant miners lamps in the corners like the san siro corners!, fuck it let's go mental.

I love how different that stadium is. That’s the sort of thing they should aim for.

If we are rebuilding I would love a nod to the city’s wonderful cultural past.

Perhaps a John Dobson - Grainger town-esque sandstone sort of vibe. Considering it would be opposite Leazes Terrace I think that would look amazing.

The inside is very impressive, love the large window, but the outside looks like a tarted up factory.

I assume that’s the angle they’ve gone for though? Any Americans care to explain? I assume it’s something to do with the city’s heritage?

Thats why I was suggesting something in keeping with Grainger town.

The cost of building a stadium of the size we're going for out of sandstone, even using only external cladding for a facade, would be absolutely astronomical. It would end up being finished in faux stone materials and look cheap. Think the Kings Gate uni building on Barras Bridge rather than the former Grand Hotel building immediately opposite.

The sad fact is that we were only able to build that way once upon a time because so much of construction was done as philanthropic endeavour - and because construction/safety/labour/regulations were so lax avoiding much of the costs of today.

Ultimately while the owners want to invest - they won't want to spend for the sake of it.

I agree though with your general point though. I do think it would be great to get some more traditional materials into an external design and some distinct architectural features rather than just being an amorphous blob straight from the Zaha Hadid school of architecture (that's not to say I don't appreciate her/their work in certain contexts).

In terms of stadia which include architectural features in keeping with the city they reside in - the Dall'Ara in Bologna is one of my favourite stadiums for this reason.

The big iconic tower but also the red brick all the way around and portico. They have a proposed redevelopment to add a roof and expose the red brick entirely by removing the existing exoskeleton - and as much as I like the stadium as it is this could actually be a case of improving its architectural value.

Photos from Inter game last season, and some renders of the proposed redevelopment.

I don't get the "please not another bowl" crowd - What shape do you want it to be, triangular?

It will be a bowl. It must be a bowl.

What kind of bowl is important though and I want steep sides behind the goals, with big blocks of seating a-la Dortmund. Plus a low roof over those ends, something designed for acoustics to push the sound out onto the pitch. That's all I ask. They can dio whatever the fuck they want then with the corporate stuff or the stands at the side.
