St James' Park

I hope all those who are saying this is worth it for the money it MIGHT bring in at some point in the future are also happy for everyone to raise their expectations accordingly and demand more money to be spent on better, more expensive players, keeping our best at the club and for us to compete higher up the league and/or for silverware on a regular basis. Because that's what Mr Llambias says is in return for selling 120 years of tradition. We need this 'to compete' he says - well we're doing alright at present competing for a European spot doing it on a shoestring budget, hoping to strike the jackpot on cheap players coming good like Tiote, Ba and Cabaye. More money and we can go for the title, right?

Somehow I think not, and the same people will be telling everyone else how lucky we are to have frugal Mike.

by 'we need to compete' I assume this in the special 'clubs run by dicks' league.

Aka The Premier League

I'm doubtful he even wants someone to pay for stadium rights. £10mil is f*** all. It'd cost him a lot more to get his brand on an equally visible and respected location. He's saving money I'd assume.

I don't get it. Why are people defending this? What's in it for you? Is it the attention? I'm honestly properly lost. Ian even disagrees with it, man!

everything was going so well, now this.....

if we start to lose ashley is the one to blame

Why should the stadium name affect the players performances?

Negative/angry chants up, positive/encouraging chants down.

What could marketing experts possibly know about marketing that they couldn't tell reknowned casino, sportswear retailing, football and marketing experts Derek Llambias and Mike Ashley?

I had to laugh at Sir John Hall and his talk about tradition. One of his early proposals - expounded in a match programme - was to sell St James's Park and build a new stadium in Washington jointly with Sunderland.

I hope the next move is to rename Gallowgate "The Derek Llambias Stand" and see people defend that.

Haha that is both hilariously and horrifying all at the same time. Could you imagine! :)

I actually could that's the scary thing.

 Totally agree. This is merely a stunt to justify using the club's upturn in fortunes to market his dogshit brand. It's very simple to see. In isolation and disregarding the emotional attachment I feel towards this issue as a supporter, it's a masterstroke from his business perspective. Simple as that.

Stupid decision to make at this point in time. I don't like it and wish it had never happened.

The overwhelming majority of football fans will still know it as St James' Park. I'll know it as St James' Park and everyone I know will refer to it as St James' Park. The official name could change every few years perhaps but it will always be St James' Park. I'll still sit in the Gallowgate End regardless of what the official name is. I'll still look up at the Leazes End too from time to time. I don't like it one little bit but it won't have much impact on what terminology I use.

Aye, basically in Mike's mind he has a massive advertising oppotunity that was just sitting there not been used.

The way they run the club is beginning to remind me of the plot of The Producers.  Seems like they're desperate to knack things up when it dawns on them things are going well.

Everything they've done so far regarding this has been to do with ripping the piss out of the fans IMO. Fuck all else. Just look at the stuff they've put on the official site, Facebook, pictures they've used (and now changed), the timing and so on. I'll be fucking amazed if any sponsor comes in, and sad as it is I'm resigned to hoping they do.
