So the argument seems to be because he's a footballer who's not behaved badly, unlike some, he's more deserving of a knighthood?  ???  Doesn't wash for me.  He deserves honours I think, sure, but not for that reason.

There's lads in iraq and such like that deserve it more than big al.

Shearer has just acted like any footballer should act. If he should expand his T.V career with being an analyst then become a manager then he would deserve his knighthood but not yet he just too young.

Footballing knighthoods have always been fucked up. How Taggart got his knighthood straight after winning the European Cup but Clough, Shankly, and Paisley died unrecognised pissed me the hell off (still time for Saunders?). Then there's the World Cup winning team, apart from Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst and Alf Ramsey most of them are sat on MBEs and OBEs. To give Shearer a knighthood before any of them would be a disgrace, and thats without the multitude of players who did more for England than him such as Lineker or Greaves. You can't give knighthoods out for service to NUFC, he's got his testemonial, his bar, his statue....knighthoods should be service to the country IMO and he's way down the list for me. Thankfully this isn't serious?

Knighting footballers and other celebrites exposes the Royal handlers as lazy frauds. There are a multitude of more deserving British citizens that get skipped over. Alan is a great footballer but Knighthood ffs?

I have an admittedly personal gripe with this knighthood, OBE, MBE thing - My grandfather took over the Percy-Headley School (in Forest Hall for those of you who are unfamliar with it) back in the 1950s when they placed mentally disabled children, physically disabled and just plain crazy children all in the same classroom with teachers that were ill-trained and overwhelmed.

As soon as he became headmaster he began a massive modernization process that was copied across Europe (the Percy Hedley school is the largest of its kind in the UK iirc). He flew all across the world bring in education specialists to better train and develop screening and educational methods for these kids and figure out ways for them to positively contribute to society. After about 20 odd years of this he got an MBE while many other people in this field (some with even greater contributions) got no recognition at all.

I have noticed a strong pattern of Brits who improve the lives of thousands and even millions get nothing but if you sell a million records or win a medal in some sport then you are usually fast tracked. The whole point of having these awards is *recognition* - well I doubt someone like Sir Paul McCartney or Sir Elton John needs any recognition - everyone already bloody well knows who they are - recognizing someone should call attention to something that actually needs calling attention to and massively improves Britain.

Another reason to abolish the Royals IMO.

Apologies for the rant.

Nothing to do with the Royals, but aside from that, I agree :D

I think Shearer deserves it. I honestly do.

As the Prem's greatest English striker of the last decade, there's a case, but it's not like he's splitting atoms.  He was a model pro, for the most part and loved his club, fans, and home town.  Is that worthy? Maybe to some.

He's a fucking OBE already FFS he's the very definition of what minor honours are for

And the fucking irony that the people who moslty couldn't give 2 fucks about how England do, you want England's greatest striker to be given England's greatest honour, no doubt for his efforts for the Toon FFS

For God and the Empire  :idiot2:

Shearer doesn't qualify under a banner which has been bestowed on both Ferguson and Robson, that being 'one's lifetime service to the game'.

Of course there'll be plenty of hero worshipper types - ie. the one who cry out stuff along the lines of "he's our talisman" or "he's the only player i've looked on as being a hero" - who will no doubt disagree.

I couldn't agree more.

I'm duty bound to point out, however, that Ron Saunders didn't actually win the European Cup, Tony Barton did, albeit with Saunders' team. However, he is known informally as Sir Ron Saunders round these parts, anyway ;-) (PS - do you ever wonder how Man City would have done in the 70s / 80s if Swales hadn't bowed to player power and sacked Saunders?)

How Cloughie didn't get a knighthood but Ferguson did is surely the best indicator of how screwed up it is.

Oh and before anyone dives in and says Cloughie didn't get one because he was too controversial, yes, yes, I know

Hmm? I always thought it was Saunders....learn something every day. Well before my time that one. Re: Saunders/City - This is all before I was born but from what I gather the major fookup wasn't getting rid of him - He was replaced by Tony Book, who managed us to our last major honour (best keep quiet about that one round these parts ^-^)so its not all bad...I think the major fook up was replacing him with Malcolm Allison, who wasn't #1 material and made some rediculous transfer decisions. That was the beginning of the end I think. No idea how it would have been different, I just don't know enough about Saunders to guess.
