Joey Barton completes move for £5.8m - Man City

£5.5 million is actually dirt cheap for an English player of his age and ability. It's artificially low because of his disciplinary problems, which mean the big four won't touch him.

Im not a Barton fan,but we need to trust Sams judgment and get behind Joey Barton.Remember feeling exactly the same misgiving way when KK signed David Batty, and IMO Batty turned out to be an excellent signing.

Of course they would if he's good enough. Didn't Cantona come with a warning sign and proceed to drop-kick a spectator?

I guessed in the region of 50k so to hear it's closer to the 70 mark is a suprise but 10 year ago 50k was alot of money. That's football i suppose. It's important to remember that we have freed up alot of wages for next year.

I doubt Real Madrid paid Woody £70k a week...Barton isn't worth that ammount of money.

Joey Barton, the controversial midfielder, is poised to complete a £5.5 million move from Manchester City to Newcastle today and his arrival is expected to trigger a flurry of transfer market activity at St James' Park.

Newcastle win race for Joey Barton

Joey Barton: will play for Sam Allardyce next season

Barton, 24, underwent a medical yesterday after holding talks with new manager Sam Allardyce, who has seemingly persuaded him to reject West Ham United's lucrative overtures in favour of Tyneside where a £50,000-a-week, five-year deal awaits.

Barton, accompanied by agent Willie McKay, met Allardyce at St James' Park after officials at City announced that the Liverpudlian had sought permission to speak to Newcastle and West Ham after both clubs had "submitted bids of £5.5 million or more for the player's services", a sum that activated a release clause in his contract.

Although McKay says his client will still meet West Ham, Barton's move to Newcastle is fast approaching the finishing post and he is set to become Allardyce's first recruit since taking over. Barton will replace West Ham-bound Scott Parker, but will arrive with considerable baggage.

He made his England debut in February but a player who has a history of disciplinary problems ended the season under a cloud when he was suspended by City after a training-ground incident in which he allegedly assaulted team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Dabo demanded police action and Barton was subsequently arrested and questioned by officers from Greater Manchester Police before being bailed until July.

That incident, that left Dabo with a suspected detached retina, continues to cast a cloud over Barton and it has been reported that Newcastle have demanded a clause in his contract to cover possible imprisonment.

When Barton's services are secured, Allardyce will turn his attention to other areas in need of strengthening, with Bolton centre-half Tal Ben Haim set to follow his former manager to Newcastle on a free transfer.

The Israeli international will be out of contract this summer and appears to be destined for a reunion with Allardyce who is also confident of beating West Ham and Birmingham to the signature of Australian striker Mark Viduka, whose contract expires at the end of this month at Middlesbrough.

Allardyce is also keen on Wigan's England Under-21 international left-back Leighton Baines and Toulouse right-back Albin Ebondo, while Czech Republic centre-half David Rozehnal has expressed his desire to join Newcastle, who are set to pay Paris St Germain a £3.3 m fee.

"David would love to play for Newcastle," said his spokesman Eliot Vantil. "He knows manager Sam Allardyce was also a centre-back and believes he can learn from him. Allardyce was keen to sign David back in January for Bolton and I know he came to watch him play against Wales." Meanwhile, retail billionaire Mike Ashley's £133.1 m takeover bid at Newcastle will gather pace this week.

Formal offer documents outlining his vision for the club and confirming details of the 100p-per-share offer, will be received by the club's shareholders in the next few days as Ashley attempts to complete a takeover following the acquisition of Sir John Hall's 41.6 per cent shareholding for £55 m a fortnight ago.

I honestly feel that we should stop this route of spending mega £££ on average players (I think Barton is a good player), I'm sure Parker was on great wages and I thought Barton would come in with more sensible wages.

Once all this crazy money stops getting thrown around and Barton has more run-ins he could prove very hard to shift (i.e. Dyer).

Spurs and Everton have managed to assemble good sides without being raped for wages. If rumours are believed to be correct, Barton is earning twice the amount of money as Berbatov or Defoe. Piss poor business if you ask me.

I hope it's bollocks and he's on £40k or so .

But they'll be easy to shift and most of the transfee recouped. Defoe hasn't enhanced his reputation considerably since moving to Spurs yet they could probably sell him for a profit and he isn't on very high wages.

Plus Barton is a far riskier signing. He could do some more crazy shit and can still do time in the nick.... all of a sudden that £5.5m deal doesn't look much like a deal and his huge wages would be an imposing stumbling block for moving him on.

The Telegraph says it's £50k per week and the Sun goes with £45k per week

Oh and according to the independent Parker is having second thoughts about playing for Curbishley again ( oh and a minor story about West Ham considering paying £20 million for Andy Johnson  )

£20m

West Ham have lost their marbles if they pay that. Get on the phone, see if they'll give us £75m + Tevez for Stephen Carr, quick!

Crazy fukers, they dont deserve the money if they are going to waste it like that.

Calm down people ... the £70,000 a week offer was West Ham's desperate last ditch effort to sign Barton, who turned them down and took what appears to be £50,000 a week from us. Great start by Barton, he did talk about the importance of being in a winning situation, rather than having more money and a flash car and house, in his interview on Sky Sports. Apparently West Ham weren't listening.

Anyone else think Big Sam is up to something here and never in fact intended to let Parker leave? Or do you think Parker just doesn't want to go to West Ham and is instead looking at Tottenham or something?

West Hams desperation to land Barton might indicate that the parker move has fallen through.

That did actually cross my mind today funnily enough but surely not. I'd be happy for us to keep Parker cos i think Allardyce could get the best out of him  and use him effectively, but i think his days are up tbh

Would be a great ploy, or us know saying since you tried to hi-jack our bid for Barton its now £10m for Parker.  >:D

Would be good if we did fuck off West Ham for more money though. By the looks of it, its not as if it was an agreement that they would get Parker once we've signed Barton. It looks like West Ham really wanted to fuck us off by signing Parker and Barton. £10m now you cockney cunts tbh.
