Bridge or Shorey? — but one very curious rumour was circulating. Kieron Dyer at right back? It took me a couple of moments to steady myself, too. But then you sit down and realise it may have some merit. After five minutes, you long for it to happen and not just if England are desperate after an hour. Estonia have yet to score a goal in six Euro 2008 qualifying matches and have already announced their intention to defend on their goalline against England. “One of the great qualities of the England side is their passes and their crosses,” Jelle Goes, the coach, said. “If you press high, then they can play perfect passes behind your defence and then you are in trouble.” In other words, they are going to make Andorra look adventurous and, in the circumstances, you have to wonder whether a solid defensive sentry such as Jamie Carragher is necessary — particularly when David Beckham’s greatest strength remains as a striker of static crosses and dead balls rather than dashing down the flank. The idea becomes even more intriguing when you hear that Sam Allardyce, the new Newcastle United manager, is giving serious long-term thought to deploying Dyer as a full back on Tyneside. Allardyce does not appear to be counting on Stephen Carr, which is probably wise. The Irishman did not even come out for the squad’s end-of-season lap of honour and if he cannot be bothered to walk around the pitch, there does not seem much hope of him sprinting up and down. Then you remember that Dyer made his international debut at right back as long ago as September 1999, albeit against Luxembourg. He won a penalty and set up another goal for Alan Shearer as he forayed forward, and it should have been the start of a successful career with England. Quick, skilful and versatile — three qualities that distinguish him from most of his English peers — Dyer had the attributes to make an impact at the top level and Sven-Göran Eriksson had high hopes of making him a regular on the left flank or as an auxiliary striker. Through his indiscipline as much as injury and illness, he has been limited to 31 caps, but his willingness to embrace Allardyce’s defensive plan shows that he may have matured. He once refused to play for Sir Bobby Robson on the right wing, believing he should be centre stage, but is now said to be happy to perform the unglamorous functions of a right back. His defensive tenacity is far from proven, and 28 is rather old to start learning, but that should not be an issue in Tallinn. As the article points out, Dyer did perform there in his first England match (albeit against Luxemborg) - can BSA work his 'magic' on Dyer to get his pace and versatility put to good use or is he flogging a dead horse? NE5 Posted June 4, 2007 Share Posted June 4, 2007 its up to Allardyce. He has the legs to get up and down the line, and the stamina. Keegan played him there for England in a "wing back" role rather than a straight right back. He doesn't have the tackling ability though. And despite supporting him in the past for his "potential", I'm now tired of him saying how he's let someone down and will do better next time. Get rid is what I would do. I very much doubt he's got the discipline to hold the line or do the nasty things that full backs HAVE to do. At home against shite is fair enough. Being pinned back by a decent left winger for 20 minutes away from home and I think he'd crumble. Stu Posted June 4, 2007 Share Posted June 4, 2007 He might not be able to tackle, but he's got the pace and stamina to keep tracking back and stopping the winger from getting a cross in...I'd imagine him to be similar to Ashley Cole in terms of defensive style (although this is based upon 45minutes against Luxembourg and the away match against Villa in 2003-04). Is definitely a better option than Carr - that goes without saying - and gives us a different option from Solano when we play teams with genuine, pacy wingers. Good full-backs are the difference between mid-table and Europe, so it can be argued that if he's any good on a consistent basis, he's worth the 80k a week if it'll help us into Europe. You have to at least admire the guy for doing it his way, and that is exctly what he is doing. I'm intrigued by this because I am sure that the idea of Dyer at right-back has come about due to something they have noticed by tracking him or analysing his game through one of his special methods. Sounds like Dyer is up for it too and if he has indeed been sold on it then it must have been a prettu impressive argument put forth for this change. This is all very different for us as it's been a while since we had someone thinking out of the box, but it's what we have been demanding and I must say it is really going to make next season interesting at the very least.
