He wouldn't be a 31 year old free if he wasn't past his peak.

 

He wouldn't be free at all had he decided to accept Lyon's new contract offer.  So while he is likely past his best (who isn't at 31?) I wouldn't say him being a free agent has any relevance.

I was just trying to make the point that him being past his peak is no reason for us not to sign him.

been reading another forum elsewhere and the Q was raised if he had played enough internationals to Qualify for a work permit my own take on this is he is a french citizen so where does the permit  come in?
