Carling Cup 2nd Round - Newcastle vs Barnsley (29/08/07)

Recommended Posts

This game has come at a good time, a home game against weaker opposition just as Owen and Emre are returning from injury and Cacapa and Enrique are awaiting their full debuts.

Seeing as Emre wasn't even in today's squad though, you have to wonder how far he is from playing. Maybe just a place on the bench for him. Given and Babayaro are back in training, wonder if they might get on?

I've been wondering about the Barnsley game, and given that the tickets are so cheap and that - on the whole - it's a dead easy opportunity to get up to actually see a game (that we'll win), i fancy going up to see it. Anyhow, i was wondering - and not only for this game, but for all cup games - what are the policies regarding paying on the gate? Is it always possible, particularly on Wednesday night? Are there specific turnstiles i've got to go to? Is it more expensive to do it this way?

Will appreciate any help.

Also, a more general question, what qualifies as as child? I'm 16 - do i still get kids tickets? Wouldn't have thought so.

Anyhow, grateful for any help.

PS - reason for why this is in both ticket and NUFC forums is cos i'm searching for a quick answer.

You'll be able to pay on the turnstile, probably one of the corner ones. It'll be annouced on Tuesday/Wednesday i'd have thought. You'll have no bother whatsoever getting at ticket

I think 16 is an adult aswell but if you look 15 just get a kids one.

If you go we'll lose. Ask Shak.

How's that?

Out. Hitting middle and leg.

Gag repetition is a banable offence. :D

Different decision tbh. Excessive appealing will result in bowling restrictions. :D

I might be wrong here, but didn't Emre get injured again last week during international duty ?

The f^cker of the national team started Emre in a friendly, after 44 minutes he came off, it didn't look terrible

but he did seem to have a bit pain in his inner thigh, though couldn't really make out if he was indeed injured, and nothing

in the newspapers about it. But seeing as how he wasn't even in the squad against boro, makes you wonder.

I always had a feeling his career was over at Inter, when he got that chronical injury.

But I always kept hoping for the better, but he's getting injured too frequently.

All change for cup clash

NEWCASTLE United will have a new-look strike force of Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi for tomorrow’s Carling Cup-tie with Barnsley at St James’ Park.

And just for good measure, United will have a new full-back pairing, with Jose Enrique set to make his first start for the club following his £4.2m transfer from Villarreal.

With both Stephen Carr and Peter Ramage injured at Middlesbrough, Sam Allardyce has to decide just who Enrique’s partner will be at right-back but the United boss told me today that Cacapa will make his full debut.

Allardyce went within a whisker of winning the Carling Cup for Bolton Wanderers and United fans will feel assured that the new boss is not taking the competition lightly.

He told me today: “Apart from the injuries to Stephen Carr and Peter Ramage, we had a few other knocks from our trip to Middlesbrough on Sunday, which we will have to look at during the next couple of days.

“But I am looking to play Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi up front, and Emre is back in training so he could come into it as well.

“Cacapa is now ready but he cannot really play at right-back, so he will go in as a central defender.”

After that initial success at Bolton Wanderers, the Mark Viduka-Obafemi Martins partnership has not really fired against Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, despite the former’s great goal on his old stamping ground.

And it has to be said that in the 45 minutes they have played together this season, albeit in the first friendly match at Hartlepool, Owen and Ameobi looked good together.

Big Sam is obviously aware that United have not won a domestic trophy since 1955 and how desperate everyone connected with the club is to rectify this.

That’s why he added: “We will be picking a team which we feel will be capable of winning our Carling Cup tie tomorrow night, but it is very important our players are up to that capability.

“The Carling Cup is a bit low-key at this stage of the season but we are still looking on it as a very important competition.

“I always feel the first hurdle can be the most difficult because it is the opposing team’s cup final and we will go out and try to be very positive tomorrow night.”

# The Football Association are studying footage of United’s game at the Riverside on Sunday to hear the chants directed at Middlesbrough striker Mido from some visiting fans.
