I've been thinking about this. Suppose the journos did know how bad Mitchell was in terms of internal reputation and his approach to the role - how would we have reacted if they pummelled him and these stories came out while the season was ongoing or whilst he was still in the role? We'd probably all be fuming at the disruption it would have caused, so I can see some argument for keeping certain things out of the public domain until his notice had been handed in.
