Should we get promoted who could we realistically get as manager in 2010/2011?
BottledDog replied to a topic in Football
To be honest, while Hughes and Bruce are ex-players with more experience in the role (and arguably the better of the possibles out there), I just can't get too excited by them. At a time when we seem to be heading in the right direction with a good group of staff at most levels, forgive me for wishing to avoid yet another period of upheaval at the club. -

What utter tosh. Again, what? He has worked with what he has had, and I don't for one minute think that this squad just 'a much nicer bunch of players than the average club'. The whole reason the squad is working is because he has dealt with players like Barton and Carrol and whoever you feel are bastards one on one, and got everyone pulling together. The whole point of managing a team is getting those players working together and playing as well as they can. That makes no odds whether they are the best squad in the league or the worst, in the Premiership, or the Championship, if he can do that, he will have done his job. As for this nicey-nicey attitude (besides the fact that seems an extraordinary thing to attack him on), it is quite clear that away from the cameras, he can rollock with the best of them. /probably more effectively if the players actually respect and like the bloke. -

I would replace him immediately. There have been too many games where we have relied on wearing teams down this season rather than making it happen. We'll come straight back down. The chances of the club coming strait back down would be doubled by fucking the backroom staff around again by bringing in Paul fucking Jewel, Bruce, or even Hughes in my opinion. -

But he has been very coy on players for the most part and I think it was good that he was positive on Moses before the Premier League teams came in, but like Miguel etc, it didn't come off. I certainly don't see it as a negative that he was showing the player, other clubs, and our own board our intentions. As for saying our team were below par, how many top managers would ever come out with that other than the extremely rare occasions where the team need a public dressing down. Blame the ref, the pitch or the plucky opposition, save the criticism for the dressing room - which as we know from player interviews, despite his calm public image, Hughton is very capable of going balistic in when necessary. -

Aye, cos saying that he wasn't hoping to sign the lad, and we'll fuck all the other teams in their faces would be sensible. -

Not what I have found, his comunication has been fucking superb in my opinion. For me his interviews pre and post match - both it his long video discussions on .cock or interveiws in the papers, have all been pretty spot on - concentrating on the players and the team, not being sidetracked by stupid questions or questions about personal life and other bollocks about himself and his team; sensible and genuinely difficult to disagree with. I love having a manager who is willing to explain things and simply seems to talk sense. -

Hughton should be given the chance in my view if we make it up. No question. Ashley would be a fool to bow to demands for change. -
He's having a laugh... (Alan Carr's dad to be NUFC Chief Scout?)

The sound of a penny dropping? Putting the club 'on the market' was just to deflect attention from his real intentions. Most people agree on this now dont they? What were his real intentions? He put us publicly on the market to try and get the hell out. It was also because it was what people wanted; he needed to stop the protests because if they continued the club would be both unstable and unmanagable. -

Not sure how bringing in kids on 6 month loans and chasing random Norwegian makes us more attractive to buyers in the summer tbh. We still have a good scouting netork in place as Ashley chose to just remove those criticised at the top; to get Carr in to head it up would be a very good move imho if possible. -
If Asley in a fit of stupidity gave NUSC any credence and allowed them a stage, we would be in the same shit.

Agreed. Bingo, those upset at his non inclusion should be happy for the times we get to see him. The calls for him and fringe players like Ranger to start, and Hughtons idiocy for not following this popular line appear to be diminishing. I still think both players will come good, but they aren't good enought yet.

Patrick Van Aanholt from Chelsea signs on one-month loan

I hope he is better than Jose by a factor of 20 and we sign him for a button and a pecan nut. Does not compute. Leg manouvrability rate increased ten fold? -
I agree that Taylor could probably have been sold in the Summer for a decent amount and that supports your argument, but a counter to that would be that Taylor was such a fan favourite that it would have pushed supporters over the edge (it's not a very good counter argument as Ashley knows by now he can do what he wants and people will still turn up and pay to watch the team). Maybe Taylor blocked any move himself? We didn't hesitate to sell Bassong though and he is exactly the sort of player we ideally would have hung on to ahead of the likes of Coloccini if we wanted to lower the wage bill. Where I disagree is with people's valuations of the likes of Enrique, Coloccini and Gutierrez. I like Enrique and disagree with the negative reports he gets, but last season you would struggle to see a positive comment about him from anywhere outside of message boards or local press. No English team would touch him for a decent fee, and the kind of foreign teams who would be interested don't have the money. Coloccini and Gutierrez are simply not really worth more than £3-4m, and their high wages make them very hard to shift without us subsidising the move and negating much of the transfer fee. We didn't sell anyone who didn't make it known that they wanted to leave for a start, and I disagree with your assesment of our other assets - A good few of the remaining big names could have been sold if Ashley had the mind for it and ended up like Boro and their great chairman, but we didn't. We kept the core of the squad and, with the players commitment and Hughton's help, got them playing for one another for the first time in a long time. Could be wrong but I don't remember Duff saying he wanted to leave, and IMO more than any of the midfielders we kept he'd have stormed this league. Of course you could be right, no-one here really knows what Ashley's intentions were, but going on past form and on the players who left, I think you're deluding yourself if you think keeping the majority of the squad was the intention. I think he was keen to move back south, but you're right on Duff not saying anything. But I think it is clear from interviews with Taylor and Harper etc that they sat down and discussed that for the sake of the team, those that were not commited were free to go. Duff may have not been as obvious as Bassong, Martins and the like but was one of those that wanted away in the end. I didn't have any faith that Ashley and co would stretch to bring any decent players in, but I had a funny feeling that there was no real intent to force anyone who was on big wages out which was the general feeling at the time. Fingers crossed the same will be the case in this window.

Portsmouth FC in yet more trouble - administration again?

No wonder this club gets a reputation of having deluded fans. Calling Fulham a nothing club. Dear me. Come on man, they're the sort of club like Charlton and Portsmouth who will have a few decents seasons, then will have to sell, battle against relegation again, and next thing you know, bang, they're gone. If Fulham are in the Premier League in 2014, I'll be shocked. Aye but there is a chance to play there for a couple of games and move straight onto Man U for £20m with Hodgson.

I doubt they'll be selling him. Was listening to Talksport at lunchtime and the Hawksbee and Jacobs show was on, the one who's a Chelsea fan seemed to think he's a very good prospect. Seems a strange thing to say though as nobody would have expected him to say anything along those lines if he's just emergency cover. Almost seems directed at the player himself and Chelsea to assure them that we are serious. /or so i'd like to think. Aw hey. Don't be saying that. -
I would.

I was happy to forgo any new signings (just replace the loadns) at the start of the window if we could keep the group together, but I realise that with suitable short term relacements, any time is a good time if the right offer is made sadly. Fingers crossed though.

Think of him as like Lua Lua snr but capable of looking up once in a while.

According to my auntys sons stepdads new girlfriend, they couldn't have played him for fear of his crippling pay as you play clause to be fair. -
Bit early to say that. As we're finding out, lots happens in the last few days of the window. Quite, would be very impressive if we held onto the core of the high earners but there is still plenty of time for outgoings.
