While true, the fact that Souness was able to overspend on "star" players like Luque, Boumsong and Owen, whereas Pardew just had to let his only decent striker go, makes their management radically different.

It's a good price for a decent striker, but fact is he was the only decent striker at the club. The other half-decent one is now out for some time with a fractured jaw, and we have to rely on championship quality strikers, at best.
