Average position since I was born is 13th. Since I went to my first match, 11th. The first figure represents over half a century of football. Clearly me thinking of par as 8th–11th was, like... deluded.

i would say you count down the leagues as if there were no divisions, ie 1 to 96? Fair enough.

If a man WAS to calculate a par by totting up all the league positions since he first went to a match/was born/whatever, what should he figure for those seasons we were out of the top flight?

Feels about the same for me. No reasoning. It just does. I also usually tend to feel that if we're doing better than Spurs then we're doing all right, and if we're doing worse than them then there's something wrong. This season would seem to be an exception to that rule, though. They're doing exceptionally well, and we're doing all right.

The Football Pink! I remember being in Thomson House one Saturday afternoon -- the father of a friend worked there -- and being shown the presses as they printed the Pink. Great bales of pink paper rolling through this giant machine and somehow ending up as folded copies of that afternoon's paper. I was fascinated and watched it for ages. Then came out of there and saw an ordinary-coloured newspaper and it just looked ... wrong.

Hell, I even miss the pre-internet, pre-mobile phone days of finding myself in some remote fucking corner of European civilization scouring barely comprehensible local newspapers for a sports section that would tell me whether we'd won or not.

I miss the Saturday afternoon results coming up on the teleprinter at the end of Grandstand, the print head laboriously tapping out every character. "H-a-m-i-l-t-o-n A-c-a-d-e-m-i-c-a-l-s 1..." And then Dr Who.
