That's a fair point. I think most of us thought we'd be spending big this summer even without selling Minteh and Anderson. Then having sold them that would release a new cycle of spending, but seems that's just kicking the can down the road. It's not that Miggy is worth £20m, he clearly isn't, but we just don't have the money to replace him even if we get good money for him now rather than lose him for nothing in 24 months.
-
Same here. Posters used to guffaw at my absolute lack of knowledge of other teams players, now the penny is finally dropping. The only purpose of other teams is so we can judge our own progress towards success and happiness.
-
They do realise players cost money in the Premier right? I mean Fraser's goals obviously played a part in getting the tight cunts promoted, you would think that would cover any nominal fee.
-
I wasn't that confident of shipping many of those out, not going to lie. Don't think Bruno belongs on that list though, don't think we want him gone at all.
-
He's obviously not that bothered about playing football. I'm sure he'd prefer to, but for him it might not be the most important thing.
-
They were performing like clowns under Poch for half a season, then they turned it round. Like I said, I just look at the quality of their squad and think it's a mistake to assume they won't be a massive threat to our ambitions.
-
Depends how fussed they are about missing out on potential replacements. If they think they can hang onto Guehi they don't really need them. How highly do they rate those replacements anyway? If they were that good I think we'd probably move for them ourselves.
-
Not to mention Chelsea were laughed at all last season as a basket case club, but they put together a massive winning run which kicked us out of Europe. Unfortunately you just can't underestimate sheer quality in numbers.
-
I agree. I can understand us trying to get the best deal possible, but since they don't really need to sell, we have to make a decision whether he's worth what they are asking or find someone we think is better value. I don't disagree with what Parish is saying, just think it should have been kept between the two clubs while we are negotiating.
-
Parish pulled a cunt's trick but unfortunately he's holding the whip hand. With Fulham ready to spend big on the older of the Palace CBs, there's absolutely no pressure on Palace to cave at all. We really should start looking at other options assuming we have any. If we really want Guehi we'll have to find out what they'll accept and make a call sooner rather than later. At the end of the window they might call it off anyway as they might not be able to get a replacement in time.
-
That's fine, I can understand him looking after his best interests, I'm just saying it was in our interests for him to be sold for £20m to Saudi - where incidentally he would also have got that big payday which he couldn't get from his preferred USA destination. He's entitled to look after his interests, and we as Newcastle fans are entitled to want what's best for our club.
-
Yep he's well within his rights. But it's also our rights as fans to cheer him when he does well, or call him out when his poor decisions end up costing us results.
-
It doesn't help that he turned down the chance to go to Saudi where he would have got that bigger signing on fee and basic salary. Yes he's within his rights to stay here and run his contract down, but it's obviously not doing us any favours as we can't get that RW while he's here.
-
He seems happy to give up his career in football in order to collect his wages. Maybe he knows he's not that good so why take any chances at Southampton?
-
Maybe, but every decision like this impacts further down the line. If we want to keep Almiron because we think he's worth more than £8.5m, then in a year's time that's £8.5m million we won't have to spend ongoing. Add that to the £12m we allegedly turned down for Trippier, that's £20m+ we've knocked back for players in their 30's in the space of 6 months. The justification must be we think they can get us into the CL this season, which is fair enough if they do. If they don't then we'll have to account for that money next season because it ain't coming back.
-
Said this in January when we turned down the Trippier move to Bayern. We ended up having to sell Minteh and Anderson instead so there's no getting away from it. We held onto Trippier gambling he'd get us into Europe and it failed. Maybe we are doing the same with Miggy, and if our aim is Europa rather than CL then fair enough. He might be good enough to be described as a top 6 player or someone who could pass for one. I'm actually really surprised we haven't been more ruthless in selling at peak value considering all the noise from Eales a year ago.
-
He's 24 though, we could get 4 good years out of him and still sell at a very decent price even if we didn't recoup all of it. You have to think of the value he'd provide as a player during that time as well.
-
It's the English market, don't see any other European clubs clambering for his signature.
-
If he didn't before, he will after reading that tripe.
-
I doubt it. He can leave anyway in two years time and go anywhere he wants.
-
I'm surprised we haven't done this already. Can only imagine we think this is still getting done, but if it doesn't not a great look for Mitchell and his recruitment team.
-
I would imagine we aren't too impressed that our bids and the exact amount are becoming public knowledge as well. Definitely a tactic by Parish to invite others into the bidding war.
-
It's out of order in my book. If we are negotiating behind closed doors, there's absolutely no need to go public on it. I think we might pull the plug on it now, and I won't be that arsed either. Maybe we can spend that money on RW istead and bring in cover at CB for now.
-
This is also something I had in mind but didn't want to come across as super negative.
-
The goals and assists were mostly coming from the left side though, Gordon had a blinding season. If we rely on Miggy and Murphy this campaign, I can see Murphy getting a few assists and the odd goal. Miggy will provide very few assists, and not many goals as everyone has wised up that he will cut inside and try to curl one in. Other than that he's not much threat. Between them they can do a job, whether that will get us into the CL might be another thing.
