  2. Xisco wants Magpies chance Newcastle striker Xisco has pleaded with the club's coaching staff to be a given a chance to help fire the side to safety. The 22-year-old has struggled to make an impact at St James' Park since his big money arrival from Deportivo La Coruna last summer. Xisco has seen his time on Tyneside blighted by a series of injuries and he has made three starts to date this season. The Spaniard is now hoping caretaker boss Chris Hughton will give him a run in the side to prove his worth. "At this moment, the manager has not given me any chances to play, and I have to respect that and keeping working. I have to wait for an opportunity," Xisco told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. "I want to play every game, but it is true every player wants to play in the big games against big teams. "I am not thinking about these games - I am just thinking about recuperating my toe. I want it to get better as soon as possible. "It is not my decision. I work and train every day for every chance. Choice "Then the manager has the choice. "I work hard in training every day to earn some chances, but it is the decision of the manager." "I have not played too much, and I am still desperate to show my best football. "It is not easy when you are not playing, but it is OK. I have to work more, and then wait for one chance." “From the first week here I have felt comfortable with this football, and I hope we will get better in the following weeks, months and years. “You have to feel fit to feel good, and I have been injured. “I have not been 100 per cent, and there has been no continuity. “It is no good for me, and nobody wants to be injured. “I am happy with the people, the city, the supporters and the team – everything here. It is OK. “My life is fantastic – I do not have any problems. I just want to play football for Newcastle.”
  3. Toon Star Loving Latin Link-Up By Craig Hope JOSE Enrique says that his recent upsurge in form has been helped by the presence of Jonas Gutierrez on the left flank. The Spanish-speaking pair are close pals off the field and are beginning to develop a telling partnership on it with Enrique, in particular, starting to produce the sort of performances which saw him arrive on Tyneside touted as a future Spain international 18 months' ago. Gutierrez, winner of the nufc.co.uk man-of-the-match award during his last three starts, is also fast approaching a return to his early-season best. And, after another showing epitomised by his boundless levels of energy and enthusiasm during Wednesday's 2-1 defeat against Manchester United, the Argentine won glowing praise from team-mate Enrique. "Jonas was brilliant," he told nufc.co.uk. "He runs and runs and never gives up. He is so important for the team and for me also. "It helps that he speaks Spanish and we understand each other. "I am very confident at the moment and I'm enjoying playing with Jonas." Enrique and his defensive colleagues, aided by a tireless midfield effort, limited the European champions to a handful of chances and in the end were unfortunate to emerge empty-handed. And Jose added: "It was a tough game but we fought well and deserved a draw. "The second goal was a bad goal but still we should have got a point. "I was so tired after the game because it was hard work but we know that we gave it everything and tried our best. "Now we must continue with that spirit for the rest of the season."
  4. or not? Youngster still wants English switch Brazilian starlet Caio Ferreira is hoping he will seal a move to England in the summer. The highly-rated forward impressed while on trial at Newcastle United earlier this season. He also trained with West Brom and both wanted to snap up the 18-year-old, who plays for Brazilian outfit Club Atletico do Porto. Newcastle agreed terms on a three-year deal, but the deal fell through in January and a late bid from West Brom to try and snatch him also did not materialise. "Unfortunately, the Newcastle deal fell through," his representative Lee Payne told skysports.com. "It was all done at our end and Caio was eagerly awaiting to get back there - but just when it looked set to go through it didn't. "It was upsetting as there was considerable interest in the lad. "West Brom came in late to try and resurrect it, but it was just too late in the day. "He is very much looking to the summer and without the constraints of the window, I don't see it being an issue." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11981_5009552,00.html
  5. Steven Taylor: Stand up, or we’re down STEVEN TAYLOR has warned his fellow Toon stars to behave like real men in their final 11 games of the season – or face playing in the Championship next season. The United defender and his Newcastle United team-mates were still reeling today after dropping three crucial points against Bolton Wanderers to leave themselves hovering precariously above the relegation zone. And on a weekend when other results did not go their way, with Middlesbrough, Stoke and Blackburn showing signs of recovery, Newcastle now face arguably a harder run-in than any of their rivals involved in the relegation dogfight. With United’s Premier League status now in severe danger, Taylor told the Chronicle: “This has to bring out the men in the dressing room. “We’ll see exactly who wants to play for this football club. “The lads need to show character and show exactly how much playing for Newcastle means to them. “We’re in a serious relegation fight. “We’ve lost at Bolton in a game we should have won. “That didn’t happen and now we have to dust ourselves off for Manchester United. “They are the best team in the world. Now we have to be men and stand up to that.” Taylor added: “We’re devastated again. “The first half was good but after the goal in the second half we just seemed to cave in a little bit. “We created chances but the deliveries weren’t there and there was no final ball there. “Personally I didn’t think we looked like scoring.” Yet United thought they should have been handed an opportunity to level from the spot when referee Alan Riley’s blunder cost them a spot-kick after Fabricio Coloccini’s effort hit the arms of Jlloyd Samuel. Taylor said: “With the penalty I saw Samuel’s hands in the air. “Refs have said in the past if you keep your hands in the air that is defined as a penalty. “If you keep them by your side it isn’t. “I spoke to the ref and asked why he hadn’t given it. He said it was because Samuel’s eyes weren’t looking at the ball. Had we got the penalty it may have been the turning point. “And Peter Lovenkrands has had a good chance too. Maybe he could have scored there but we were just lacking that cutting edge in the final third. “Overall we defended well enough,. The one real shot they had, they’ve scored.”
  6. Tino Asprilla backs Toon Army to keep United up Feb 25 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle CULT hero Tino Asprilla was back on Tyneside today – with the Colombian insisting the Toon Army will help the Magpies stay in the Premier League. With United heading into a crucial run of fixtures starting this weekend at Bolton, Tino feels that Newcastle have enough quality to stay up this season with future home games the key for survival. Asprilla wooed fans at Gallowgate after arriving at Newcastle in 1996 under Kevin Keegan with the black- and-whites going for the title. But Newcastle surrendered a 12-point lead to Manchester United to finish second. But nevertheless Asprilla provided the United fans with plenty of magic moments in a black and white shirt and inspired the team to their first appearance in the Champions League. Asprilla told the Chronicle: “I am delighted to be back in Newcastle. “I actually regard it as my second home. “I was only in Newcastle for a couple of years but I loved playing in front of their passionate fans. They are the best supporters. “I know they will have many memories of me, but it’s the same for me because I remember just how good it was to play in front of such a noisy crowd. “To see them so close to the danger area was a shock. “But I think, with the supporters behind the team, they can stay up. “And with so many quality players in the squad I think they will be safe. That’s what I am hoping for. “It has been great to be back and see so many friends, and I wish them well.” Asprilla took part in a five-a-side game at Power League in Dunston today alongside former team-mate Peter Beardsley before meeting children with learning difficulties in Gateshead. The ex-Parma and Colombia star also dropped in on his old boss Luiz Felipe Scolari in London. Asprilla, who made 48 appearances for United, spent time with the recently-axed Chelsea manager after keeping in touch with his ex-gaffer from their days together with Brazilian club Palmeiras. The former United star is best remembered for his outrageous skills and his stunning hat-trick that sank Barcelona in the Champions League.
  7. Magpies fans in protest at owner http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45014000/jpg/_45014726_45014712.jpg Hundreds of football fans packed Newcastle city centre for a protest rally against the club's owners. Fans signed a petition demanding changes at the top, and called on sports tycoon Mike Ashley to appoint new directors. Police stood by at the demonstration at Grey's Monument. Members of the Newcastle United Supporters Club (NUSC) staged the rally before the team's Premiership clash with Everton on Sunday. They urged fans to strike a balance between making their grievances heard and supporting the team. NUSC chairman Malcolm Shiels said: "We have got to try and get the balance right between supporting the team that we love and still letting the management know we are not happy with what they are doing. "The mood is not good; it is one of deep mistrust; being taken for granted, and being kept in the dark." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tyne/7904698.stm
  8. Valencia paid upwards of £5m for him. If they part-owned him to the tune of 50% for example, then that would mean his market value would in the realm of at least £10m. Not likely. was 7 million euros according to Valencia fans........ As for why they bought him? I think a couple people in the thread already covered that.......it seems commonplace for Spanish and Italian teams to just buy players and immediately loan them out, especially if the player is non EU and their slots have already been filled (I think the also case with Gonzalez)
  9. don`t think he would get a chance (like Xisco) if Kinnear was in charge......more confident he will get a chance under Calderwood/Hughton. Who knows, he might well play a vital contribution towards our survival at the end of the season
  10. He could come in Handy and Be an absolute world beater for last few games of the Season and save us from Relegation ala Tevez at West Ham. We sign him permanently and he becomes a great player for us. Showed promise when he came on against Hull, so I'm willing to wait and see what he does. Btw i saw him in metro centre with Gutierrez and Xisco and didn't look like he was limping or injured at all so he may be a quick healer. hope that becomes the case. --- Ignacio Gonzalez may boost NUFC survival bid NEWCASTLE UNITED’S forgotten man Ignacio Gonzalez could yet emerge from his Toon nightmare to play a part in the Magpies’ Premier League survival bid. The Uruguay international arrived at St James’s Park on the final day of the August transfer window. And his signing was thought to be one of the straws that broke the camel’s back for Kevin Keegan, with the former United manager walking out on the club shortly after Gonzalez signed on a year-long loan deal from La Liga big boys Valencia. Yet the South American has barely been seen since, with just two substitute appearances against Hull City and West Ham all the 26-year-old has to show for his efforts on Tyneside after the recurrence of a serious Achilles injury restricted him to a period of isolation at the club’s Benton HQ. The midfielder, nicknamed Nacho, netted 45 goals in 170 appearances for Danubio in Uruguay and was keen to shine in the Premier League before being struck down by injury. Hughton told the Chronicle: “I’m sure we will see Nacho this season. “I really do feel for him. “It’s been incredibly frustrating for him. “This is a lad who has missed most of the season apart from two appearances against Hull and West Ham. “He’s missed almost every game. “I feel for him because he came here on a year’s loan to show what he can do. “He came here to play and that has been the big disappointment for him.” Gonzalez has been scheduled for a mid-March return but, with just a handful of games left to play this season, he could return to the Mestalla a disappointed figure despite some high hopes when he first signed for the Magpies. After the 3-1 loss at West Ham shortly after KK’s departure, Gonzalez said: “I am here for a one-year deal but maybe this could be permanent if it goes well. “I came to Newcastle to play games and the Premier League is one of the best stages in the world to do that.”
  11. Newcastle striker Xisco, who is frustrated by his lack of Premier League action, has confirmed that he will not be plying his trade for four weeks. He said: “I have broken my big toe and I’m out for four weeks. My injury is a blow because the manager started to count on me. “Everybody told me this change [of leagues] would be beneficial to me, but, as I almost never play, I haven’t been able to find out. “But I have experienced worse situations. No pain, no gain. I believe I will succeed in England. Besides, you learn a lot from such a situation.”
  12. tbh I can`t remember many clubs clamouring to sign Santa Cruz at that time but hindsight is nice
  13. Same here, and got a signed Riquelme and Solano Boca Junior`s shirt
  14. I paid 5 euros for a ticket at the Bernabau a few seasons ago for a Real vs Dynamo Kiev champions league match. We wont see prices like that over here as we`re mugs tbh......no matter how high the clubs put up the ticket prices the fans of many clubs still seem to come in their droves so clubs aren`t going to change their policy.
  15. We backed Kinnear's transfer-window requests Feb 12 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle DEREK LLAMBIAS claims all of Kinnear’s January transfer-window requests to the board were accepted. He added: “All I can tell you on this window is we said no to nobody. “We asked ‘who do you want?’ We were given two players. One was Michael Johnson, and we asked how much. “It was £8m, and we waited two and half hours before we heard back from Manchester City. “So then we asked ‘who else?’ We went for Kieran Richardson, that bid went straight in. “We had already agreed Kevin Nolan and Peter Lovenkrands as back-up, and Ryan Taylor. “We really wanted another midfielder because of what had happened to Danny Guthrie and Joey Barton. “It did not happen – but we never said no to any requests. We are happy to spend the money.”

  20. Magpies failed in Elano bid Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias has revealed the club failed in a bid for Manchester City midfielder Elano during the January transfer window. The Magpies made well-documented moves for City duo Michael Johnson and Nedum Onuoha last month as they tried to bolster their ranks. Joe Kinnear’s side were rebuffed in their attempts for both players, but Llambias has now divulged that Brazilian playmaker Elano was also within Newcastle’s sights. The 27-year-old has endured a tough second season at Eastlands and has struggled to maintain a regular spot in Mark Hughes’s starting XI. Brazil coach Dunga has also weighed in with comments on the player’s future, advising him to leave City in order to benefit his international career. Now Llambias has discussed his club’s move for Elano, and has stated Newcastle will try and sign at least one of the trio of City players again in the summer. "Relegation is a major fear for us, but we did try to get the players the manager wanted in the transfer window," Llambias told The Journal. "We aren't a selling club; we're a buying club. We are out there in the market. We never said no to any requests. We tried to get Michael Johnson in all sorts of different ways. "We tried cash and we tried players. We tried for Nedum Onuoha and we tried for Elano, but none of those combinations came off ... we will be going back in the summer for certain individuals." Newcastle boss Kinnear also revealed last week the club had failed in an attempt to bring Tottenham striker Darren Bent to St James’ Park. http://www.setanta.com//uk/Articles/Football/2009/02/11/Prem-Llambias-on-Elano-bid/gnid-39748/
