That's what I was saying earlier. Any quality signing is dragged into the torpor rather than pulling the squad out of it. Instill a bit of belief, then make expensive additions to a club on the up. It's like they say about getting your hair cut, you should always go when it looks it's best. Eh? If you go for a haircut when it looks s***, your barber thinks you like your hair to look s***, and gives you a s*** haircut. Surely you go to the barbers to get your hair to stop looking s***? Nope. You need to be more pro-active than that. Well what if you go to your barbers while its looking good to have it cut, and the barber does a shit job and the end result is that it now looks shit, despite not being shit before you had it cut? There's always that danger. At least you reduce it if you turn up with your hair looking like you want it too. Next week: Belt and shoes, why they should never clash. Fancy a bit of hoovering HF?

Or whatever Torres cost Liverpool in the end.

is the correct answer EDIT. I think we should have offered money for David Bentley, and gambled. Now he will cost more in the summer. The day we can't tempt the best players from the likes of Blackburn, is the day we are , eeerrr.......back to the days pre-Shepherd and Hall in fact. Buying talent is ALWAYS a gamble, invariably some work out, some are great and some average. It should never deter one from spending and showing ambition as this will attract MORE talent along the line. We've had some big money failures in the past, but that was in main due to bad management and poor scouting. This is in the process of being rectified as we speak. THere is no club out there who haven't purchased duffers for big money from time to time.

£25m could. But £50m might not. It depends how wisely that money is spent. Newcastle more than anyone should know that spending big doesn't necessarily mean you will improve. Exactly. Doesn't stop people thinking it's the be all and end all though. Lets spend nothing then, see how far that gets us. Yes, that's EXACTLY what I said. Straight out the 'NE5 book of straw-man building'. So what will turn this club around? Positive thinking? mackems.gif

Saved me a post.

Martins and Owen should be the front two for all the remaining games.

Funny that as the team top of the league have made a profit on transfers over the last 5 years and have never been big spenders. In fact you could argue that their most expensive buys have been among their worst. You don't need to throw ridiculous amounts of money at the problem if you do some decent scouting. Unless you just want to keep the fans happy of course. We desperately need to buy some quality, I think most are aware of that.

Agreed. In playing terms, he HAS to be a better bet than Carr or Zog, by virtue of the fact that i) he can use his left foot to kick the ball and ii) he has played a lot of games at left back, and knows what the hell he's supposed to be doing there. There's GOT to be something behind the scenes here. On the rare occasions I've seen him play, he's looked like what I think he is, a young player coming to terms with a new league. He's done pretty well, albeit there are things to work on. How he's supposed to get used to the league without playing in it is something else I don't get. Rumours are that he is unhappy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quincy_Owusu-Abeyie That the one? Yeah good player. I'd have him.
-
KK will do the business next season. He's forgotten more about football than half the managers in the game know.
-
What happened to that that Quincy bloke at Arsenal? I quite liked the look of him.

A debate requires people willing to discuss both sides of the view, not avoid questions you can't answer then keep advertising your own. That's fair enough, but there's no need for the insults. It's just petty and doesn't paint you in a good light. Anyway, each to their own. If you want to get into a slagging match though, please do it via PM rather than on the forum. I don't want to get inot a slanging match which is why I said fuck off. If saying that is wrong in the context it was said, then you should maybe re-consider your signature. *Dave's hand twitches over the red button*

Ok, how about 'Arnesen did make it work for Spurs but if he had not known what he was doing Arnesen could have seriously f*cked the club's finances'?
-
Parky Industries is grateful for the backing Robster.

Spurs bought 15 players in one window when Arnesen first joined and seemed to be buying a couple every week. They've all gone now but Pamarot, Davis and Pedro Mendes have all done well for Pompey. The likes of those players, plus Atouba, Naybet, Carrick etc provided the 'quick fix' stepping stone to the next level from the one where Spurs had previously languished. That first season we missed Uefa competition on the final day, to be followed by successive 5th places. Buying a lot of players in one window can work, and work well, if it's done properly. Football is a simple game ultimately...Get good players and get them on the pitch.

I've been keeping an eye on the Ramos creaming. Good post.
-
No doubts about him. Greatness in the making.
-
We're essentially talking about sacking a manager at the wrong time imo (transfer window), consequently not refreshing the first team and bringing in a man who has been out of the game completely for quite some time.

Glad you clarified that there. I mean none of this £10m net bollocks. I think we need to focus on youth development, big money buys are a thing of the past. KK won't last long then. (I know you're playing Devils advocate). I was taking the piss out of everyone who insisted not spending like fuck in January was a good idea. ....the same people who don't realise that football clubs making a profit is a relatively new thing and even in the past was the preserve of only a few.

The whole team were shite for most of the game, except Milner and possibly Harper when he came on. Given, another very poor display, he did nothing right today but Keegan screwed up by playing him. Beye, looked OK at times but was caught out far too often. N'Zogbia, had a nap for the first goal but wasn't helped by a static Given who seems to be tied to the goal line. Taylor, gifted them 2 goals and did a spin that Parker would have been proud of. Faye, poor in defence but got the goal. Butt, shit. Barton, Shit. Smith, shit. Milner, the best of a bad bunch. Owen, tried but didn't deliver, he wasn't given anything by others. Duff, so slow and runs into areas where we'll get nothing from. Thank god we didn't buy any players in the window. Cause as everybody and his cat knows it was impossible to find players better than what we have.
