There’s obviously the money issue but Garcia’s release clause seems low and we can’t have either of them alongside Pope, because we’ll have to play an entirely different style of football with him. Would they both back themselves to win the starting job?

Psychological factors may have had a small impact but the primary reasons, IMO, are we’re not very good at playing against teams who are set up defensively, particularly at home, and the squad is stretched far too thin. Also, his setup going in to the game was completely wrong.

You’re right. An obvious example, and a very recent one, are Howe’s comments post-Everton game. We performed badly in that game because the squad is too thin and we were missing too many important players, including a fit striker. He said something else, though, probably to help with transfer bargaining over the summer. Despite this, quite a lot has been made of his comments.

I’ve very much enjoyed this development in his public talk about transfers recently. He’s earned the right to put pressure on the club to back him properly.
