The closests you come with Howe is when he says we could do with more competition for a position. We have 3 players + Gordon which is a lot of players for one position, so unless one or more leaves in the summer we don't really have space for more, which is also fair.

I don't think he'd mind. It's more Howe that has to get used to the thought. Burn is hardly going to decline if picked, no matter where he is asked to play.

Murphy had a great season. If you can get someone like him, only younger, quicker and better dribbler, who can also go inside and shoot with his left, that's a fairly low risk signing. Unlucky for us, it seems Elanga had the season of his life with Forest, in a team set up to play to his strengths, and he has been unable to adapt. Even low risk signings can fail. Sucks extra hard when we've paid a premium for him which will affect how much we can spend on new players at least in the short term unless we do well in the selling department.

Schars future hasn't been announced yet, so we possibly have him in the mix too, and then we also have Murphy. For a non-european campaign, that doesn't scare me. I think Thiaw and Botman could become a great partnership. They need to step up and take more responsibility though. You rarely see them giving instructions to the defence or demanding players come short to make themselves available, or scolding players not picking up runners.

Can't remember exactly what I voted, but think it was a 7 out of 10 around 1. September 2025. Probably a 3 out of 10 now. Partly why I won't use the signings as a stick to beat Howe with, as they made sense at the time even if I thought we overpaid for Wissa and Elanga in particular, and to some extent Ramsey.

Luckily this is something that can come naturally within a group as people age and gets more responsibility. Really hope at least one of them, preferably both, steps up next season. Botman is 26 now so you'd hope he is coming into the time of his career where he takes the burden so to speak onto himself now that Trippier and possibly Schar will be gone.

Last season:

Feels like a no brainer that he would be great if we made some adjustments to the way we play. Mainly having our wide players play more like wide forwards so he has more runners around him when playing up top. I think a Barnes/Gordon - Woltemade - Osula trio up top over a season would do better than anything we've put out since Isak left. If Howe is unable to set up a team without a lone pacy striker up top, it's better for both parties that Woltemade moves on in the summer.
