Gaston Ramirez, loaned from Southampton, kept the recruitment drive going before a late opportunity presented itself to manager Steve Bruce. Hatem Ben Arfa could leave Newcastle United on loan to a Premier League rival but only if he could drive from Tyneside to East Yorkshire in time. “It was a really late deal,” says Wild, who has been with Wolves since 2017. “We were trying to get him down to do some sort of medical and he ended up getting lost. Ben Arfa makes his debut against West Ham in September 2014 (Photo: Stu Forster/Getty Images) “We needed to get an extension to register him. You had to submit a deal sheet by 11pm. I think it was 10.35pm and he was lost in York. “We ended up finding a hotel for him in York and rang them up to say we’d have a player coming in, we needed them to receive a document and then fax it back with his signature. “We had him running into a hotel to sign this deal sheet and then get down to Hull as quickly as he could to finish off the registration.” Ben Arfa eventually made it to the club’s training ground beyond midnight to conclude a deal that still brings Wild out in a cold sweat.

Mental that we'll be one point behind these if we beat them lot! I've always had a big dislike for these lot and Pickford going there intensified it and it has gone through the roof after their treatment of Rafa!

Absolutely fantastic read that - such a likeable, positive character! GIVE HIM THE ARMBAND!

So a £3m loan fee, £12m survival bonus and £1.6m on wages?! I think we'll get him late on Monday personally!

Please not Bruce - you know what will happen and we’ll never hear the end of it!

The game-changer - he’ll keep us up!

From the Athletic - also, Fede was the last CH we signed - August 2018 As Benitez would regularly say about his Newcastle signings, many of whom were very low down his list of targets, “It’s not about who I want, it’s about who I can get.” Had he been backed, Benitez was adamant he could have acquired, among others, Mason Holgate, Wes Morgan and Marlon Santos, although the latter’s loan from Barcelona in 2018 fell through due to work-permit issues, rather than because of Newcastle’s unwillingness. Nathan Ake, too, was courted by Benitez in 2017, but Newcastle were unable to match AFC Bournemouth’s £20 million offer to Chelsea.

The complete silence from when Bergwijn shoots is a thing of absolute beauty! It must have bedlam in that away end!
-
He'd be a superb signing - fingers crossed!
-
I said that on Sunday - it’ll be ironic if an Everton win up here rubber-stamps his return!
-
Our current dog-shit position should work in our favour here for a change as surely Man Utd won’t want him to go to West Ham or Spurs?!

I know he's never broke a contract but he must regret turning us down in October (well, going to Everton was absolute lunacy!). I never knew that he turned down Atletico after his short stint at Chelsea! https://theathletic.com/3078146/2022/01/19/what-next-for-rafa-benitez-everton/
