Indeed, I knew I had heard Souness state this! Newcastle spent vast sums on transfers during Souness' tenure - including the signing of Michael Owen from Real Madrid - but the Scot refuted the suggestion he was fully backed by then-chairman Shepherd. "I would argue that point because at the end of the day my first choice was (Nicolas) Anelka and (Luis) Boa Morte. "I was told, when I spoke to the people in Turkey, when Anelka was for sale at that time, that he could be bought. But I was told he wasn't for sale and couldn't be bought. "So instead of us spending the £12million there, we bought Albert Luque for £10million and Michael Owen for £16million." Asked whether those were his decisions, Souness said: "No. I was told Albert Luque would cost £2million." What a load of bull-shit! Former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd admits he should “never have signed” Michael Owen - but claims he was “swept along with the tide” of supporter opinion. The Magpies broke their own transfer record in order to bring Michael Owen back to England from Real Madrid in a £17million deal back in August 2005, holding off competition from his former side Liverpool in order to secure his signature. Owen arrived just days after Albert Luque’s acquisition - the Spaniard was brought to Tyneside from Deportivo la Coruna in a £9m deal that summer too - and the former England striker was unveiled at St James’ Park in front of more than 20,000 Newcastle fans. During four injury-plagued seasons on Tyneside, Owen scored 30 goals in 79 games before leaving on a free transfer during the summer of 2009 following the Magpies’ relegation. Shepherd made a number of marquee signings during his time as Newcastle chairman, with Owen one of the most high profile. Yet the businessman regrets signing Owen, and suggests he was convinced into doing so by the supposed fervour from supporters to bring the ex-Liverpool striker to St James’ Park. “You’ve seen it 100 times in football, that you throw money at it and it simply doesn’t work,” Shepherd told TalkSport last Friday. “Certainly I did - I spent more than £300m on transfers and it didn’t work. “Michael Owen was nearly £20m and I did get it wrong - I should never have signed him. “But the crowd wanted him, the supporters wanted him, everyone did at the time. “I was sort of swept along with the tide and I did it. I shouldn’t have done.”

Just one of these days this season I'd love to see us go full bore and go straight at the opposition with our pace. Gayle up front, Diame in the hole, Ritchie and Yedlin on the right, and Lazaar and Atsu on the left. (Never going to happen but one can dream) No was can you drop Dummett after the last two mind and I'm not a fan!

WTF! Didn't Souness come out and state that Shepherd bought Owen and the he instead wanted Anelka?
