Would be nice to have a centre midfielder on the pitch that could pass the ball forward. We are so slow to attack. Duff, N'Zogbia havent played badly and Geremi has put some decent balls in, other than that, shite all round!

Thats basically how I feel. We've got nothing of worth to actually compete for, other than mid-table mediocrity at best, so 17th/12th doesn't really matter and the first garuntees we would stay up. Fuckin hell its 4 games in. All it would take at this stage is a 3 game win streak and you'd be up there. We've seen from our first couple of games that we can play so its not beyond the realms of possibility that we can have a respectable season. My opinion will of course be harder to justify the longer this situation drags out.

Don't you think it says a lot about a player when Liverpool were virtually giving him away and the only other club with half an interest was Bolton f***ing Wanderers? I'm not saying he wont do a job, because he's ok for the time being. But he's the sort of playeryou want at your club as 5th choice CM, not first. What it says to me is that you (probably) haven't seen a lot of him prior to coming to us and that he has played well for us so far, so for you to call him "very average" is just pre-judging him based on nothing other than the fact that he didn't cost much. I'm not saying he should be seen as a regular for us, but he has played well and showed a lot of promise in his time here. Well it actually says it wrong to you then, doesn't it, Karl? I've seen him play our reserves on numerous occasions and also for Bolton and Liverpool on the rare occasions he got a game there. I've also had reports from my Scouse supporting mates about him. No sign of England U21 honours, no sign of a decent club wanting him. Don't get me wrong, i'd love him to do well and establish himself in the team, doing a "Rob Lee" if you will. He just wont. I've just watched it for the first time since I saw the game on Sat. tbf that was fucking nasty cant imagine he intended on breaking his leg though. Frustration boiled over due to circumstances etc. Needs to learn from it though.

I can see a Steven Gerrrard influence in him tbh, in the way he strikes his passes and how he takes his first touch. He almost moves to where he wants to go as he passes the ball. And before anyone jumps on this I'm not saying he's as good as Steven Gerrard.

Why is it that some people on here take to criticising our better performers? This lad has looked far from an "average player" for us and has shown a lot of potential yet some people are on his back. The same thing happened a couple of seasons ago when Milner was pretty much our only decent on field player, and people were saying we should get rid of him when players like Duff, Emre and the likes were constantly turning in shite. Maybe its because his name's Guthrie and not a household name people are spouting shit and not actually watching his performances.

He may have heart and done alright since he came, but he is a very very average footballer. Have to disagree. He's showed real potential to be a very very good player in my opinion. Totally agree.
