I used to do a play-by-mail league as well, where you would submit your team sheet for a weekly fixture, do transfers, the whole lot. Basically Football Manager by post. You’d even get phone calls on your Mam’s landline from other managers trying to do deals Managed Wimbledon to the Premier League title with Klinsmann up front, not too shabby. I’m honestly not even that old.

I’ve been doing it since about 1995 when you had to photocopy the page from the Telegraph. Used to hold a live auction at school as well I think the PL getting their own league was a big factor. And smartphone apps.

That’s not really logic.

The importance of refereeing decisions is a major problem for football and is really hard to resolve. We really shouldn’t have more debate about decisions than about tactics and skill. It’s a really low-scoring sport, which means anything that allows or denies a goal is absolutely huge. A lot of rules are also subjective, and two people will reach different conclusions. VAR really should be sorting a lot of this, but the way it is applied is absolutely disastrous. And then the rules itself don’t help - handball, for example, being an absolute farce. We have professional referees with I assume the best training and preparation an official could ever have. So I guess it’s arguable that it’s not really possible to get more decisions right than they do now.

Is there a role other than player?

Wonder if people are rating the quality of the squad rather than rating the transfer window.

I can't see any way a home game to Palace is tougher than an away game at Anfield with our reserve team. It's a tough game which we shouldn't underestimate, but I can't see why we would.

The fact we have a vision for what we can become makes it harder to assess the window as well. We have a lot of players who won't be part of that project for much longer, but you're never going to upgrade them all in such a short time.
