  1. He got them to the World Cup though when they were in major danger of not doing so, albeit it could be argued that was not much to do with him, it was never going to work on the big stage though. you don't think a better manager would have pissed them through qualification compared to the dogs dinner he made of it? he didn't have a clue what he was doing as i recall it, picking hundreds of players and changing things every game a semi-competent manager would have utilised their talent much better than he ever could
  2. it was surely the worst managerial appointment in many, many years at international level anyway, if not the worst ever the equivalent of giving Gazza the England job just after his playing days had finished Messi must be mortified that he's essentially been fucked over in 2 world cups now by awful, awful management (on a personal level that is)
  3. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jul/27/portsmouth Portsmouth's squad list shows 14 players – and no goalkeeper Yikes!
  4. you should get Bluestar to try one on for you and let you know, Stu will fill you in on the details
  5. might as well join the love-in, good news! just need a midfielder or two that can run with their legs on loan and 20m on a new striker and the seasons sorted
  6. As ever we seem to not connect Stu. I'm saying I consider 10 - 20m to be "reasonable investment" for Liverpool should they make it, not that they will. That's why I said "for me would be reasonable". With the current squad they have, plus say 2 good players for that type of money they'd make the CL again imo, assuming the signings work which is always key. As regards your comment in bold how can you possibly say that Stu? Gosling will not play this year and Perch might not even be first choice in whatever position he's best at (which seems under question). How on earth is that better than what Liverpool have done? Anyway as you say there's 5 weeks for hypothetical signings to be made, I offered the opinion at the start of this that Liverpool's owners will recognise the need to strengthen on the pitch as it will help them sell the club eventually. At the end of the transfer window I expect to be proven right, although that strengthening might end up coming from the inflated sale of a Mascherano or Torres or someone. I may well end up being wrong on the net spend part, in which case fair enough.
  7. I think I said that earlier: someone in charge has to realise the tipping point, fat fred didn't do that with us. Mike Ashley has gone past the tipping point in the other direction and to answer your question I don't think he's smart enough to make prudence work in our favour, ever. As for Liverpool, again as I said, I don't think they're anywhere near the point where they should stop spending reasonable amounts to keep in the CL. Fair enough if they piss 100m away this summer and fail they'd better rethink but they have a good squad and now a good manager. Reasonable investment will see them through imo. I agree, but where does it come from? Certainly won't be from the current owners - so that leaves their supporters hoping for a takeover (see: NUFC September 2008) "Reasonable investment" for them remains to be seen I suppose, 10 - 20m net spend (say on 2 very good players in key positions) on top of what they've already done for me would be reasonable. As madras says if that 'gamble' fails and they miss the CL spots again then it'd have to be time for a rethink surely? Obviously a Torres or Gerrard sale for stupid money might change the game considerably for them one way or the other. As for us Gosling might not play until well into next year and there are serious doubts about Perch at PL level from what I can gather so I think we have a ways to go before we can consider ourselves strengthened on the pitch for the forthcoming slogfest.
  8. there is discussion, it's just that most people appear to think there's "no fucking chance" in a situation like that surely discussion is driven from a compelling argument by the alternate viewpoint? in this instance there simply isn't one
  9. isn't it to report rumours in the press and then members comment on their view of the likelihood/appeal of said rumour? which is exactly what's happening I would have though a thread on a forum would be about discussing the possiblity of said-linked-player rather than simply it being a: "********* has been linked - is it likely?" "Yes" "No" "No" "No" it is - pretty everyone has said there's no f***ing chance and one dude has said don't write it off yet from what i can see what more do you want? "No chance" is what you call discussing? Ok. "discussing" and "discussing the possibility of an 11m or so player coming to us" are 2 very different things if you want to discuss a la football manager then fair enough, but to discuss in the realms of reality then the "no chance" merchants are on the money to be fair

  11. FWIW my definition of a target man is perhaps unconventional - for me a target man has a lack of movement on the pitch if you like...has a singular way of playing and fighting the CB's for the ball within the width of the 18 yard box he's a target man because the rest of the team always know where he is, they don't need to be looking which side of the pitch he's ventured into before playing the pass 'cause he's always in the same sort of area ready to battle for the ball mick harford was a target man, for example

  14. this is spectacularly missing the point i was making, if that's what you're addressing - i wasn't saying they should strengthen to reach that stupid valuation but they will know they need to strengthen (the owners i mean) to stop themselves going backwards as we did when smart arse mike gambled on transfers and took the club backwards by XX amount of years as i said liverpool might not spend 50m net but they'll do something to ensure they're stronger on the pitch this coming season so far i don't see mike ashley being that astute - we might get more bodies but that does not equate to strengthening in any real sense
  15. what on earth happened to him?
  16. never a truer word spoken to be honest, lovenkrands is gash
  17. having him back is like having a new striker, same thing surely?
  18. it's a good question, maybe they want a loan to buy deal or something? EDIT: or a fee, loans aren't always free i suppose
  19. fuck me, what we could do with a 10th of that we'll be lucky to spend 100th of it!!!
