The cynic in me thinks Howe didn’t want him, he probably wanted someone else, so is making a point. It happens a lot in football. From the little I’ve seen I don’t believe lack of ability is the issue. Things will be clearer in the summer when we see if there’s an obligation to buy.

It’s very hard to know from the outside who is identifying and pushing for which players. I tend to favour whoever wanted Bruno and Botman (I always assumed Nickson, but who knows). Whoever is involved needs to understand the restraints we’re operating under, and that means favouring markets that offer better value for money. We can’t afford to have a domestic bias.

It’s still a mystery to me what makes him so highly rated tbh, given that he’s apparently not transfer focused. Man U fans seem to be expecting him to run their transfer policy just like we were.

At his best Murphy wasn’t really very good, he’s probably going to be guff after a season out injured IMO.

Bellingham has arguably been the best player in the world this season tbf. Palmer is having his first season as a first team player and he’s been fantastic. Great work rate, technique, finishing, creativity. He would have been perfect for our RW.

I expect we’ll settle on a lowish 8 figure number and he starts around September. It’s worth noting that Newcastle have been the professionals in this. Man U have been leaking everything and doing a deal with Ashworth behind our backs, and now Ratcliffe, perhaps still sore at having his pants taken down by the Glazers, has gone all Joe Kinnear in the press. Man U will be fine and will inevitably compete at the top again when they get a good manager and fix their transfer policy. The rules are rigged in their favour so it’s not like anyone outside the ESL clubs is going to surpass them in the medium to long term and really push them down the table, no matter how well the clubs are run.

Everything Newcastle is doing is standard practice, it’s no meltdown. If Man U don’t want to pay the compensation required then they can wait or look elsewhere. The ball is in their court.
