Yeah pre-season doesn't always mean much. I think the season Spurs had a nightmare start (and was the reason for the Harry Redknapp "we had 2 points from 8 games") they had an unbeaten pre-season - just checked wiki in fact and they scored 33 and conceded 5

The second defender (the one on the edge of the box) has a mare but the rest of them are just done by quick feet. Lovely little goal, albeit whilst getting hammered.

I'd say depending on the system full backs can be the most important players. The amount of times I raged watching a Newcastle team with Carr and Babayaro playing wank there would attest to that.

He's always looked okay when he's had someone next to him doing the offensive midfield work. As others have said he's at his worst when he's trying to be something he's not. Saying that, even during his good spells he was prone to an absolutely mental turn with the ball now and again.

Fancies sitting fourth choice and picking up a cheque? I don't think he's really been 'first choice' if everyone is fit near enough since he's been here, yet he's totalled up a silly amount of appearances. With permacrock Taylor in front of him and our history of making good defenders look awful, who's to say he won't play another 20 games this season? (God forbid). Can't blame the lad for sticking round, we so far haven't replaced him well enough or we've had a manager who's a bloody idiot picking him.
