The new 1997 Stadium proposals were for the "Castle Leazes" area of the Town Moor NOT for Leazes Park !!! Newcastle United FC : New Stadium Plans. No. 1 - The 1997 Proposals . . . There have been many proposals over the years (and over the centuries!) for Newcastle United Football Club to either build a new stadium at St James' Park, or to build a new stadium elsewhere. These various proposals are clearly ideal "Newcastle as it might have been" articles, for inclusion on this thread. Just to be different, this time I thought I would start with the most recent set of unrealised plans, and work my way backwards. So, here is No. 1 . . . the 1997 proposals to build a new stadium a few hundred yards away from St James' Park, on "Castle Leazes Moor". To get a CLEAR idea of where this stadium was to be built. At the top of this aerial photo, Castle Leazes Moor and St James' Park, can both be seen . . http://www.freemenofnewcastle.com/images/MoorsNorthWestLarge.jpg Here are the clubs plans (seen from above) for the new stadium on Castle Leazes Moor on the left, with the (St James' Park cut-in-half) St James' Centre, shown on the right . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundPlan.jpg A view of the proposed new stadium, at the 'South East' corner, nearest to Leazes Park lake . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-6.jpg Another view of the proposed 'Castle Leazes Moor' stadium . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-5.jpg This sketch shows the proposed 'Leazes Way' walkway through the enlarged Leazes Park, that would have lead from the new "St James Centre" (proposed indoor stadium on site of St James Park) to the new stadium on Castle Leazes Moor . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-2.jpg Another sketch of the proposed stadium, from Leazes park . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-1.jpg The "ST JAMES' CENTRE" . . . was an important part of the overall plan. This was to be an indoor stadium on the site of the current St James' Park. The South Stand and South West corner would remain as they were, the East and Milburn stands would be demolished, and the Sir John Hall stand and corners would be dismantled and re-erected closer to the remaining 'South Stand', to form the indoor stadium . . as shown, with the building over Strawberry Place linking to the 'new build' over St James' Park Metro Station . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-4.jpg One of the envisaged advantages of the 'reduced size' St James' Park/Centre, to the immediate area, would be the extended Leazes Park, as shown here where it is overlooked by Leazes Terrace, at the point where the demolished 'East Stand' used to be . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-3.jpg Now, the above plans and proposals, in the clubs own words at the time, from their "Newcastle United Football Club VISION STATEMENT" . . . http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/7thMarch2010.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnited1997VISION.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnited1997VISION001.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnited1997VISION002.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnited1997VISION003.jpg

Completely agree with all of that, well said.

This period of "no news" is the very best thing that could be happening. It means one of two things . . . (1) Work on the Takeover is proceeding through its various stages, as during that period of negotiation neither party would be saying anything at all . . like now ! or (2) Nothing at all is happening, as it was all "made up". Either way, this quiet period will END, and then (and only then) will anything that means anything (ie not media know-nothing speculation) be said, and we will then KNOW the answer. Until then, we should all just relax and wait !!!

EXCELLENT post, reflecting the views of myself and many people I know. Well said young-fella !!

Maybe so. But I know NUFC have a far better and passionate support than Spurs, especially when Ashley goes. And when he finally does we will be a better club that Spurs again like we were before Ashley Excellent post, and totally correct, Just a propheteer. Well said.

OUT of the FA Cup "two rounds before" the big clubs even join in !! If nothing else teaches them that they are a genuine Third Division Club now, then that fact should do the job. Out of the cup two rounds before (historically) they should even enter it !

And Shearer was injured and didn't play until the end of January as well. How truly, truly PATHETIC it is, that we should have to even 'think' about that. How low have we fallen, it is a constant embarrassment !! We finished 13th and made an FA Cup Final with Barnes & Shearer scoring 7 each in all comps. We’d kill for a season like that now. Interesting post distortions !

NOT new to here at all !!!!! My point here is that (pathetically) we DO have to think like that. It is not us posters / fans being 'negative', it is our brain-dead owner that has forced our club into the "nothingness" that it is currently stuck in. Not us . . THEM.

I think you and a few other people are in for a rude awakening when you find out there is enough people who actually attend games who will be happy to give local Bruce a fair chance. Not a 'rude awakening' at all, we all know that there are many people who do not really care about the club and its future at all. They will all be there "cheering good old Brucie and Ashley along" at the tops of their voices.

what a knob Very clever. Clap for yourself. It's astonishing how incapable people are of dealing with a point of view that is not exactly in line with theirs. Not surprising though. Typical of the nonsense we see all over the place nowadays. Tragic stuff. KaKa, Your points about me are inaccurate. I am just "shocked" that any Newcastle United supporter can show so much 'interest' in this exercise. That is all, it really is strange, whether you agree with me or not . . it is!

I like him too. Still such a young manager that I think should have learned and improved more over the last few years. It will be very interesting to see what players we can get in midfield and upfront. That is really the key thing. The defence is already sorted for him for the most part. This is so depressing to read. Why is anyone actually 'showing interest' in this process? It doesn't matter . . . anyone who knows how to say "well we tried to stay up but we just couldn't quite manage it" will do. It's all pointless, hopeless and a complete waste of time.

Now, that description of Ashley could have been written by almost any Newcastle United supporter. Which it obviously has been !!
-
Very true, but there will still be some who go and BELIEVE they are doing the right thing. I was at the Fairs Cup Win too . . . https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=2177948

All being well, he will be back as our manager again in a few weeks, under new owners.

I'm sure this has already been said, but let's hope that a 'Caretaker Manager' is appointed. Don't care who it is, but it would tell us a lot. Too much to hope for, I suppose.

If true there are many ways to read into it:- 1. Takeover done, to be announced next week...Ashley decides he doesn’t want to be around when it all happens 2. No takeover, no deal for Rafa....Ashley runs scared and pisses off on another holiday. 3. He’s trying to get more money than is already being offered and is off to the states to try and drum up more interest. 4. He’s taking the p*ss......couldn’t give a toss about the supporters, and is off on another jolly. Number 4 sounds about right It is number 1 - certainly. This whole "quiet time", that is upsetting (worrying) so many people, is totally the correct and ONLY way that a proper takeover and all the legal complications can happen, in peace. No daft 'public comments', while the hard work is being done. Inevitably, it is very close now. Very close. Just relax people, and W A I T . Good times are coming. Is that ITK or just your own opinion? My opinion, I am not an ITK, but it is NOT just a finger-in-the-air opinion, it is arrived at from sheer (and to me, quite obvious) LOGIC. Just think about it you guys, and what I say is the only 'totally logical' answer to what has been happening. And, thankyou Stifleaay, for your support. There is plenty of logical reasons as to why it isn’t happening I'm not saying that it is totally logical that it is happening OR that it is (as you say) NOT happening . . . I am saying that the only "totally logical explanation" of what has been happening recently (the SILENCE) is that something is happening behind the scenes. Quietly is how the work is best done. Let's face it, if work was not happening (progress not being made and the deal having fallen through) then "for sure" one side or the other (or both sides) would have been SHOUTING OFF (a lot) about how it was the other sides fault !! Yes?

Thread is becoming comedy gold, there's fuck all else going on. Lighten up Comedy gold. I wouldn't even give it the wooden spoon. The cringe is off the charts. Yes indeed, this has just become a real "classic thread" (to everyone except those who have no humour) as the recent biscuits/chocolate/marmite posts have totally clearly demonstrated the absolute contempt we (most of us) have for the way Ashley and the Club treat us with their arrogant "no comment at all" behaviour. The recent posts give them the treatment they deserve, you could say that we are "taking the biscuit" out of them !!

WHY has no-one mentioned Blue Riband
