Do you really need a manager? Instead you form a council amongst the players that decides who's playing each game. Players with authority enough to control the others, you could call them "The Elders". The council will be responsible for scouting upcoming oppositions and form tactics for each game, seeking advice amongst the players when needed.

Watched a Valencia 1-5 Real Madrid game there a couple of years ago. Very steep stairs but a very nice feeling to the stadium, had a really good time before and after the game.
