well, if you aren't dumb enough to recognise Ashley is the wrong man for the club and taking it downwards like Sheffield Wednesday, then there is nowt wrong with that. Smith has the same DNA as S.Taylor, chest puffed out, heroic blocking, crunching tackle, shouting and pointing style. Smith is barely more mobile than Butt, he just stands in the centre circle and launches himself into opponents, most likely out of frustration what with being marooned in a no-man's land of a position. I've actually forgotten how bad Smith is, although if there was ever a game he'd shine in, it'd probably be against the likes of Bolton or Stoke, where his "grit" and "industry" (note the inverted commas) would come in useful.

I'd be happy if we lost Owen Viduka Duff Smith Geremi Cacapa and Edgar, and gave Bassong, Krul, Lovenkrands and to an extent Carroll and Forster decenter deals. I'm not talking crazy money, but better deals that make them feel valued.

I'd think it would be the second case, even if he was unsure of his capability, he'd surely get a run out in the Carling Cup or even as a sub when there was a few injuries. Boothroyd isn't stupid enough to think that flair players simply won't work in the Championship. Because they do, but you need a grafter next them (if they're a CM ofc).

Because good players accept pittances. Bassong will be on less than Cacapa. Jonas will be on less than Duff. Martins will be on less than Viduka. of course you can get better players on smaller wages. It's all about value for money.

Rinaldi was a funny one, he was the one creative bright spark in Watford's PL season... then he disappeared from the team, and was released 6 months later. Watford had a lot of soldiers that year, but not much flair, and the fact he stood out in the PL but then didn't get used in the Championship did surprise me.

Assuming Owen and Viduka leave and we peddle Geremi and Smith, that'll be between £200,000 and £300,000 a week off the wage bill to start. If we can get shot of the stupidly high earners, that might equate to a little bit more transfer money.

I'd be interested in hearing this again in a few years (assuming him and Ashley are still knocking about) and sort of counting any of these pledges off.
