But I thought football clubs were to be saved from this now that Everton have been docked points for financing a new stadium, Nottingham Forest have been docked points for building a team that could stay in the Premier League, Leicester have been chased around trying to get out of the Championship and trying to stay in the Premier a league, and us an Aston Villa are not able keep our best players as Liverpool buys everyone else talent, Man Utd spunk hundreds of millions shite players whilst they lay off dinner ladies and are over £1bn in the red and Spurs are allowed to be £1bn in the red financing their stadium.

Salzburg never doing much in Europe, Leipzig never challenging my Bayern in Germany, and New York never winning the MLS. Hardly encouraging for what used to be the Falcons.

This is it. You look at La Liga who have a distribution model distorted towards Real Madrid and Barcelona. In Italy corruption has been it’s biggest downfall, plus the fact that all the stadiums built in the 80’s for Italia 90 aged badly. Germany is all about Bayern Munich with their clubs selling their best players to them, even when there are brief hopes of another team coming along to compete against them.

I don’t think Benfica are a good example there though. They are a side who are in a period of transition. A lot of their good players aged out, younger players have been snapped up by other clubs in Europe. We are just not used to them not being competitive and in this period. The same applies to Ajax who again are a shadow on their former selves after years of going through a similar transition period. Other European teams have broke through, Atalanta and Fiorentina in recent years are big examples.
