If De Jong can stay fit he could arguably be our best player. Granted I'm judging him on his time at Ajax but still. There's a very, very good no.10 in there somewhere. The sort of player we've been missing for years.

I think the fee has played a big part in people's perceptions of this deal to be fair. Having read what people have written, I don't think anybody is actually 'advocating' the sale of this lad but I don't recall many discussions on this board about him in the past. All of a sudden, Everton have stuck a £6m offer in and there's outrage that we're letting him go and the Chron are reporting that he's a 'defensive whizz kid'. I get that when things like that happen it does make you wonder how good this kid can be but for a 16/17 year old who has never featured for the first team - even in the second tier or cup ties - it's crazy money to turn down.

Those comments from Liverpool fans has given this signing a bit more about it to be honest. I think the few talking about him being a defensive full back are key here. I can see him playing in games we're not expected to get anything out of, whereas Yedlin will likely be the more attacking option.

Absolutely. There's obviously a reason a guy as ludicrously talented as Hatem hasn't achieved more in the game. He's fallen out with someone at every club he's been at. Football has changed in a huge way over the last 10-15 years and the tactical side of the game is now more prominent than ever, meaning carrying a mercurial player is not an option for most teams wanting to compete at the very top. Having said that, I'd pull off my ballbag to have him back here. Not at Nice like. Of course. He was nice at Nice.
