TBH I'd never really heard of him before today, but apparently we tried to sign him back in 2013 (ish), and matched the bid just before he joined Fulham.

Got no issues with it to be honest. At least he's being open about it, and wants to keep his options open incase we do go down. Look at Townsend.... played well under Rafa in those last few months but ultimately we still went down, he'd signed a permanent deal but wanted out just 6 months later. Whatever contract we get Lingard on, hopefully he's still motivated enough to perform for his England WC place if nothing else.

I do remember that seemed to be the first time the club trotted the line that we suddenly didn't have £35m to spend on a player/players transfer fees, as the money also had to cover the wages over the course of the contract, signing on / agent fees, etc. Basically the start of the lowering of transfer expectations and fees being spent. The failed late transfer day attempt to hijack Bryan Ruiz (?) to fulham was funny though.

I voted for DoF or an advisory role, but in hindsight, I think if he came in over Howe, given his history, there'd always be that perceived threat to him (Howe), and people/media saying Rafa was just waiting to step back into the managers seat. Probably best to leave the past where it is, and move on.
