When the top of your realistic aim is the minor European places, you can take a bit of a punt with almost exclusively shopping in those markets, but if you genuinely want to regularly compete with the top teams, you have to buy proven quality occasionally.

Whether or not they think they’re being clever, I don’t know, but they’re playing a dangerous game with the way they’re treating players at present. Maybe they think that as long as you offer big enough wages, you will always attract players, which is almost certainly true to an extent, but if they keep this up, players and agents will start deciding it’s a bad move for their careers.

I’d suggest that’s a tad harsh (and bizarre) for someone with 140 appearances for Liverpool in an era where they’ve mainly been superb, as well as 15 England caps.
