Beggars belief, it's honestly like you're the bloke in Quantum Leap and have just been transported here without any memory of the last 4 years, or even this summer. Howe's hit rate on players, not just here but at Bournemouth, is exceptional. This idea that he's out his depth and needs a DoF is baffling. Time and again we do this with his signings, forget to credit the instant successes to him, question the life out of the ones that don't immediately work, then quietly move on to how they're brilliant a year or two later and put the memory of those early questions into room 101. Gordon, Hall, Livramento, Tonali, Barnes have all been questioned. All have shown their value. Elanga is stretching it, I'll give you that, but at the same time, although Howe did want Elanga, the player he demanded, and the player Pep would get because he's at Man City and not Newcastle was Bryan Mbeumo. Elanga was second choice, likewise a lot of other players. The question is whether someone like Pep, without his reputation, without being at a club that can get what they want, and with the same resources as Howe would be doing better. My answer to that is no, I vividly remember Pep crying foul that he couldn't do what he wanted to do, simply because he needed Kyle Walker, I remember him not being able to do what he wanted last season because he didn't have Rodri. I've watched him time and again overthink and fuck up knock out matches. These managers at the absolute top level are extremely highly strung and need maintenance to run properly. Howe hasn't even been in that position and has only ever showed that he punches above his weight.

I think Eddie is adored like, football fans, especially the loud ones, are just fickle. I know what you mean about the heart on the sleeve stuff though, but equally I think people also love how good Howe is at saying the right things and not getting rattled.

We're quick to forget that Howe's done better than that with worse players with more frequency.
