We see this argument a fair bit. Re. Our player roster isn't fit for a Champion's League run. Absolutely fair. We've very little chance of progressing in the CL to the extent that more progressed clubs are. It'll take years until we can compete at that level. Nothing is going to change with that situation by signing a left back in this window. Hopefully we do but if anyone is harbouring ideas of true CL progress, I'd say that's unrealistic.

I often don't understand the reasoning of people (generally) but here it often goes along the lines of 'but if our best players are out, then we won't have 100% best players! We must sign more of the best!'. Strengthening comes in many forms, and I sincerely doubt the coaching team don't want to improve things wherever possible. I don't think that's always going to be via signing new players, esp. as we know how limited we are right now in that area. Also, things are going to go wrong during a season. Whatever happens, you can guarantee that.

But as it's turned out, we seem to be under that much scrutiny that we're having to play with a completely straight bat. Straighter than those who are making the most noise, apparently, hey Liverpool, don't mind that Saudi money when it suits you though eh.

What's the betting that he's actually carrying a long term injury that'd prevent him playing, and this is an under-radar way of injecting funds without too much oversight due to the low fee? I'll just get rid of this tin foil hat now.

If he's involved in placing players or helping them while on loan then fair enough I say. I doubt he'll be paid a king's ransom for that.

Tripps for me like

I think so much of the humour (and mean-spiritedness at its worst) is largely a recognition that this sort of transfer just isn't what we're used to. It's like the flow of the universe going the wrong way. Newcastle are still the underdogs and not recognised for what they do well; the media in the UK especially only seem to focus on the negatives and downplay the positives. Unless you're a team wearing red or blue you're just not worthy or respect. So some of the blowback is borne of that bitterness. I hope you stick around!
