There’s a degree of pragmatism with our business, in no small part due to FFP but also because we’re way ahead of expectations on the field. I get the impression we’d much rather do the deal that works for us - even if it’s not necessarily one of the ‘problem’ positions - than buy someone we’re not convinced about to plug a gap. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get a CB or a LB this window, just because there might not be a deal to be done that makes sense. We’ll just have to wait and see.

No point getting worked up about something which might happen. Even if we do sell him, you can guarantee we’ll get the best possible deal and it’ll be reinvested.

I don’t think what Kaka has said is that bizarre. When the response to overt, vicious racism both in a footballing context and a societal context is consistently appalling then eventually the only conclusion you can draw is that unconsciously it’s basically endemic. I naturally disagree with the suggestion that every individual England fan is on some level racist, but deep down I know the truth is that a lot of the gestures towards inclusivity are pretty surface level and prejudice still exists in spades. Beyond the 22 players on the pitch football is still overwhelmingly white.

For all the whinging I genuinely think that FFP has been good for us. The way PIF are currently running the Saudi clubs gives a glimpse into what we could have expected had there been no limits on what we could spend. And I’m not sure it would’ve paid dividends.

I think it’s as much a tactical thing as it is a delivery/personnel thing. Our approach is always to get bodies in the six yard box, which is understandable given our squad of giants. It does mean we’re very static and whoever gets their head on it has to generate all the power.
