I think the disagreement then is that I don't think we need to improve massively at every position we have that needs an upgrade... I'd take any upgrade on what we have at RW, so long as the price is reasonable. We don't need every transfer to be 40m+

The point would be improving our squad, no?

Can't let perfect become the enemy of the good, your Raphinha's and those on similar wages are a lot for the club to stomach, and quite literally any RW we buy somewhere north of 10m would feel an upgrade based on what we have

Absolutely - should have hastened to add that he was put in a tough spot last season. Don't doubt he did what he could and it wasn't his fault his replacement was done the entire year

Didn't mean to get chippy if I came off that way. He definitely had a nice little run I recall once Sandro went down. And I recall it being, in the moment, the right choice to start him over Sandro during Sandro's struggles. From my perspective, he is neither technically capable, nor athletic, and usually, you'd like one of the two, and preferably both.

I don't mean to be rude but did we watch the same team last season? Opposing teams cut through our Longstaffian midfield like butter. That's not to say he didn't have a couple of nice games after Tonali was out/beforehand.

Think his one above-median quality is his positioning. Always seems to find the right spots in the box before launching it 30 meters wide of the mark.

Longstaff usually seems genuinely likeable, but if PIF cosign Staveley's ambitions, this lad can't be anywhere near the starting XI. There are relegation-battling sides he wouldn't get a start in. Happy for him to get the odd 20 30 minutes as needed - think he can be serviceable as a squad player. But being nice doesn't put points on the table. Also, not for anything, but you'd hope the lad would have a bit more self-awareness after a truly awful season. Bit strange to impliedly lambast fans and make yourself out to be the victim when you can't go 30 seconds without flopping onto the pitch. Would've been much more honorable to say I didn't have the season I wanted to (due to injuries, new kid, what have you) and I'm eager to come back better next season.

The no one's available line for RW is strange to me. No one available in world football who would be an upgrade on Miggy? Or no world class options available and willing to sign for us? We dont need a Guler to appreciably improve at RW

Not sure the back line needs an overhaul. Quite like our young personnel in Tino, Hall, Kelly and Botman to carry the torch. I think the only thing giving some pause is that there is such a blatant lack of quality at RW, which had us all pulling our hair out for lengths of the season. With that said, we don't know what club plans are. We very well may see Gordon on the right and Barnes on the left to start (would love this). In that case, or even in the event we can secure a modest upgrade on Miggy/Murphy, a big spend at CB seems totally defensible

Well it would just be good business. Frustrating and wearisome as that might be for fans. But it could be a right place right time type situation as is suggested, in which case I'm just reading too much into the tea leaves
