Aston Villa 4 - 1 Newcastle United - 09/02/08 - post match reaction from page 24

Delighted with the first half tbh. Cut out the daft freekicks we gave them and we've been by far the greater threat.

Still think we're not good enough to defend a one goal lead though, so it'll be another nervy 45mins.

How quickly has that half flown btw? Good game.

Got to be pleased leading at half time especially as when we are in possession going forward we seem to lack ideas. Several times in the 1st half players with their back to goal played the ball back when they had time to turn. But that's just a small gripe really.

Barton was never known for been a good passer, but for getting in the oppo area and scoring.

He's been alright, people let a couple of late sloppy passes skew their opinion of the entire half. Same with Carr; done enough.

Faye and Emre on for Barton and Butt please Kev.

Aye that would be good wont happen though

Why would you completely change the midfield after winning the 1st half reasonably comfortably? Would be insane to do that.

One or two really good performances, one or two really bad. Our need for a decent centre-midfielder just becomes more and more obvious every single game. Barton's been atrocious, can't keep the ball to save his life, and Butt's done OK but in Villa's half he's shocking. Milner, painfully slow, but that ball in was an absolute peach; superb delivery. Duff needs to be doing more aswell.

We take far too long to counter-attack - lack so much pace with N'Zogbia and Martins not in the team.

Caçapa's been well organised at the back where Taylor's been to distinct opposite. Carr is a dreadful footballer and i'm thrilled that we've got Beye back.

On the whole though we're doing alright, deteriorating towards the end of the half like we usually do (there's something in that...), but we're playing well. That passage of one-touch football at around the 35-minute mark was superb and it would have been a brilliant goal. Owen's done really well on the ball, we need to give him it more. Smith can't even win a header now which renders his contribution to the point beyond 'nothing'.

Pray that we can hold it together.

Cacapa is an absolute rock and i'll kill the next person to say otherwise

Hes becoming quite the defender, comparing his recent performances to his early ones.

Always knew he was quality though, his history at Lyon shows that.

Carr is clearly uncomfortable on the wrong side, but is doing his best. That backheel up at the corner was shite though.

Overall though, so far so good! A bit lucky perhaps, but that's long overdue.

About 36mins in, we linked about 20 passes before an overhit cross. I was rubbing my eyes in disbelief!
