Realistic Summer Targets

Pavyluchenko has been a bit out of favour at Spartak of recent n all. Read somewhere he got dropped to the reserves after getting sent off or something along those lines and is only playing as Pogrenyak is injured.

Good player but we'd be buying him just because he's available, not because we need him.

We need a centre-back and we need cover for right-back. I reckon he'd be a cracking signing.

Agreed.  You'd be hard pressed to strengthen the squad better in a couple of positions for £2m.

Might have got this wrong like, but I'm sure I overheard on scottish radio this morning that we're in for Allan McGregor for 6m, apparently competing with Spurs for him, heard it whilst eating me breakfast like.

Just Checked, you're right - although pretty much word for word the same as what the shields gazzette are saying...

Gunners eye Toon ace Shay

Jun 11 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

Shay Given

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger is ready to test Newcastle United’s resolve to keep keeper Shay Given at St James’s Park.

And United have responded by checking out Rangers’ Scottish international keeper Allan McGregor.

Sources both at St James’s Park and in the capital have confirmed Arsenal’s interest in United’s 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international.

Wenger has made no secret of his admiration for Given and he is on the look-out for a new keeper now that Jens Lehmann has joined Stuttgart.

This has left Spaniard Manuel Almunia as the only experienced keeper at The Emirates and so Wenger’s interest in Given is understandable.

It’s probably fair to say Given is a better keeper than the former Albacete and Celta Vigo man.

While most of his United colleagues have been on holiday, Given has been working away as he seeks full fitness following his hernia operations in Munich.

Yet for the first time since Kenny Dalglish brought him to St James’ Park from Blackburn for a bargain £1.5m in 1997-98, Given is not an automatic choice.

For during his lengthy absence his stand-in Steve Harper has been superb, and United could be tempted to cash in on Given as a result.

Harper is one of three key players at St James’ Park whose contract comes up at the end of next season.

Michael Owen and Steven Taylor are the others, and while Kevin Keegan would like all three tied up on longer deals, there does not seem to have been much progress on this score.

If United do sell Given and go for McGregor they will face competition from Spurs, keen on re-uniting the Rangers keeper with his former Ibrox colleague Alan Hutton at White Hart Lane.

Two of Keegan’s initial targets for next season, Jonathan Woodgate and Luka Modric, ended up at Spurs and a third, Richard Dunne, almost joined them.

That was before Portsmouth dangled a wage packet of £78,000 a week in front of the Republic of Ireland international and things changed at Manchester City following the sacking of Sven-Goran Eriksson and the arrival of Mark Hughes.

Meanwhile, Norwich City will NOT try to hijack Shola Ameobi’s move to Ipswich Town after United accepted a £3.5m package for the 26-year-old striker from Portman Road.

Ipswich have agreed to pay United £2m down, with another £1m on appearances and a further £500,000 if Ameobi helps them win promotion.

Glenn Roeder does not have this sort of money to spend on one player at Carrow Road, and in the meantime Ameobi is waiting to see if any other clubs, especially in the Premier League, come in for him.

When Ameobi does go, it will mean that the new regime are breaking even in the transfer market.

For while United have spent £21m on a total of nine players they have recouped that amount through the sale of Kieron Dyer (£7m), Scott Parker (£5m), Emre (£4m), David Rozehnal (£3m) and Ameobi (£2m+).

What's he done at West Ham to justify a £5m price-tag?

we payed 6 for him and he was with us for 2 seasons and outstanding in the 1st one. threfore his pirce should have at least stayed the same.

Conveniently ignoring his final season here when he was utterly shit.

Why?

He's an absolutely first class keeper at a very young age(in gk terms!)

Really developed over the past few years, highlighted by last seasons wonderful and sometimes unreal displays!

And before anyone goes on about how crap the SPL is (usually people who dont watch it!) he was superb in europe also!

6 mil for shagger# would be unreal piece of business!

#he really will shag anything!

Just a shame we never really pursued Hutton too, ideal KK attacking full back who defos would have joined us ahead of spuds to be closer to home (he was forced by rangers to go!)

Getting more worried even for a pessimist like me; Emana prefers lowly Betis to us. Thought he is a realistic target...
